Went to Monterey Tennessee this past week and did something a buddy of mine and I have been wanting to do for a long time. We went wild boar hunting. I took my grandpa's .270 (mostly because it will by my rifle one day and I wanted to harvest something with it while he was still with us). By buddy used his bow (which I will do next time...that was a blast trying to stalk them with the bow) We filmed eachothers hunts. I found out that I like filming hunts almost as much as I like hunting! That was a challenge and a lot of fun too! Here is a picture of my hog. It is a Russian Boar sow and weighed between 170 and 185 pounds. She had thick long hair and will make me a nice mount. By the way, you are looking at the exit wound side. The entry wound was quite a bit further forward as she was quartering slightly to me. It was one shot and down. I was at the bottom of a steep ridge and she rolled probably 70 yards down towards me after the shot head over heals. We got that on film too.

Great hawg!!!!!! ;D Were you hunting on private ground or a lodge? I went several years ago to Crooked Creek in Jamestown and had a blast with a bow.

We were at Wilderness Hunting Lodge in Monterey, Tennessee. Actually, it was WAY out in the boonies, but Monterey is the address. They have really nice facilities. I recommend them. I would try to schedule mid-week though. We hunted Thursday through Saturday and there were quite a few hunters when the weekend rolled around. They have 3 seperate hunting areas. The one we hunted was 1100 acres (and it is VERY steep and mountainous). They also have a 400 acre piece and a 900 acre piece which I don't think are quite as rugged. It was a blast! As I said, I want to do it again with a bow next time. Chasing my buddy around and filming his bow stalks was great fun and a good challenge. We worked REALLY hard to get his with a bow, but we got it done. Here is the lodge we stayed in...our building was only about a year old. My two hunting partners also scored on a couple of nice Barbarossa rams. The one in the middle was with a slug gun and the one on the right was with a bow.

Nice Hog. I have checked into the Wilderness Lodge before and it sounds like a great place. Would you recommend it?

The price was 675 for a wild boar which included 3 nights stay and all your meals. The food was very good as well.
I would recommend them, but I would try to book mid-week. The weekend got a little crowded. If you don't harvest anything all you have to pay is the 250 dollar deposit which covers your lodging and food. Non-hunters can also go at that price. I may go back sometime as a non-hunter and just film for friends. It is a nice place.
They have all kinds of other animals to hunt, but to be honest, the hogs are the only real challenging hunt...and there the challenge is getting on them with a bow. We had a blast doing that.
The guides field dress your game for you. They also skin them out and cape them which is included in the price. If you have them process the meat for you it is 115 dollars but it is vaccum packed and ready for you before you leave. You can leave your capes with their taxidermist. He is the owner's brother and he does good looking work. His prices are competitive with others I shopped around. 400 dollars for a hog mount...425 for the rams my friends took.

How long did you have to stay to get your Boar? How long was your shot? Does the distance yeld itself to take one with a pistol?

How long did you have to stay to get your Boar? How long was your shot? Does the distance yeld itself to take one with a pistol? I would hunt them with a pistol if I had one. When I go back I am going to hunt with a bow, like my buddy did. That is a nice challenge. To get them with a bow, you will do a lot of walking. I had my boar within and hour and a half of hunting time...but I was using a .270. The rest of the time I was chasing around after my buddy trying to film his bowhunts. With a rifle or slug gun it shouldn't take long to get a boar. With a pistol or bow, it could be a bit more of a challenge...depending on how choosy you are about what you shoot. You don't have to pay (except for lodging and food), if you don't take an animal.

We were there this past March hunting hogs. If you are looking for an exciting hunt I'd recommend doing it with a bow and hunt with dogs. We hunted with a guy named Cory and I believe he's the only one there that takes you out with dogs. If you do you'll most likely be hunting the 1100 acres.

Nice HAWG! I would love to do this someday. Might just happen because it seems pretty affordable. Do you know of any place here in IN that there are hogs?
