Woodmaster called me from Illinois and said that he shot a pretty decent 8 pointer at 20 yards and hit it well..
The problem is the deer ran across a small bean field and into a wood line along a big creek. Woodmaster then heard a big splash.
After waiting awhile he went to the woodline and walked the bank shining his light into the water and never saw the deer in the water.
The likely scenarios:
1) The deer could have swam across the creek and got out on the steep bank on the other side?
2) The deer died/drowned in the water and went under?
3) The deer died/drowned in the water and is floating downstream?
We will be going back over there in the daylight with a john boat. We will most likely pick up the blood and see where he went into the water. Then check the opposite side for an exit from the creek
If we cant find where he came out on the other side we will go downstream looking for the deer and checking any log jams.
Does anyone know - Do dead deer float right away? If so, how long?

Woody-I`m certainly not a CSI techincian, but- If the deer had air in it`s lungs when it fell into the water-you`d think it would float until it`s lungs filled with water-which they would after a period of time. It would depend on the direction the deer was when falling into the water-if head upstream, into the current, the body would take on water quicker-right? Lastly-and this is just a rumor I heard-but since the obr has come into effect-all wrongs are righted and deer hunting is pristine- so.....in a nutshell-I couldn`t tell ya. ;D ;D ;D

That buck I shot last year ended up in a creek. I saw him go in and a small portion of the body stayed a float. I had to get a rope and lasso him to pull him out. Creek was about 4 feet deep.

I believe i've read that the deers hair is actually hollow, which aids in help keeping them warm and dry. Along with helping them float when crossing rivers and streams. Which makes sense to me, how the do deer cross the river so fast with hoofes like that? Lug

Shot a buck last fall and it dove in the Pwder River in Wyoming and made it to the other edge before expiring. Waded the river and the critter floated pretty good on the drag back across.

I would vote for the floating downstream scenario... Either way, hope you find him!!!!

Woodmaster went up to the Lynnville area at daybreak to help his best friend trail a buck, before we head to Illinois..
His friend's deer has been found. It was a gut shot and was still alive after 17 hours. Big deer die hard.
He is back in the middle of some stripper pit spoil banks. They have to get a four wheeler to him and get him out.
Then we all head to Illinois to search for my Woodmaster's deer...
One down and one to go.
Wish us luck...

I shot two does last year that both ended up in a creek, saw both fall over while trying to get across the creek, both were floating when found. in fact I had to wade in waist deep water,as one of the does was floating down stream and had gone appox 200 yards befor I caught up with her.

Does anyone know - Do dead deer float right away? If so, how long? I don't know about dead deer, but I know from experience that a dead coon floats. My wife, my father-in-law, and I were fishing one time and we had this dead coon floating around. The current in the creek was such that it made a big circle and kept coming back. The stench was awful and my stomach has never been very strong so right after my FIL made yet another joke, and I was laughing, I started puking. Now anytime I'm laughing my FIL says: "don't get him laughing too hard he'll puke!" Ok, I was kidding about not knowing about the deer. They do float. I had a dead one I had to drag across a creek one time. He kept wanting to float away.

A couple of years ago I was deer hunting in the Lake of the Woods area of Canada. I shot a nice buck that was about 10 yards from the water. The deer ran into the lake and fell over dead and floated about 30 yards from shore. When my guide got there he said you better wade out there and get your deer. I said I paid you a couple grand for this hunt...you had better wade out there and get my deer. Yes dead deer float.

We don’t know what the splash was…….but it was not the deer.
The buck never went into the water. It expired on the same side of the creek as Woodmaster was on.
When he got into the wood line he made a right turn up river and went down after a total run of about 150 yards.
Last night Woodmaster shined the river downstream from where the deer entered the wood line looking for the deer in the water..
This afternoon we went to the far side of the creek to see where the deer might have come out. The bank is steep and we could not find any place where a deer came up the bank.
That lead us to believe that he was in the creek or never came across. As we were walking back and forth we spotted him lying on the opposite shore.
We drove back around to the other side and recovered him.
The hit was good but it never exited because it hit the off shoulder.
Back trailing the blood only gave us about 15 yards of blood. He probably ran until that point and then started walking and fell over.
He is a very nice and wide eight pointer. Looks to score about 135 or so.
Woodmaster's friend’s buck was a very massive ten pointer that will score out at about 150.
Pictures later as Woodmaster has my camera card.

Congrats on finding the deer.
A couple of years ago I was hunting near a swamp and shot a buck. A few seconds later I heard a "splash" and thought for sure he went down in the swamp. I followed the blood trail right to the buck and it turned out he never went into the swamp. I am pretty sure the "splash" I heard was him crashing into the leaves as he fell. Maybe this is what he heard?
