thanks for the reply Jack! Last I heard (we have a meeting this week-end) the state is going forward with the purchase of SOME of the Minnehaha property. I hope to know more after Saturday. Jack

We are also going to try and get parts of the 7,000 acres at the Newport facility.

Now for the depressing part of the program...
Peabody apparently sold the methane gas rights to a company called CNX this past spring and they have started installing gas extraction wells all over Minnehaha. The Deputy Director of IDNR stated that they were rethinking the purchase of the property but for now it is on hold pending their review. Turns out they are planning on a density of 1 well for every 20 acres and that the smell and damage from road construction could be significant. Not a pretty picture for a potentiial DNR property that they were going to spend upwards of $1000 per acre for. They are renewing the lease ($1/year) but purchase is not looking good at this point. The 2 people I talked to that had visited the property were both unimpressed with going forward with the purchase. One was a former DNR Director and the other a former Director of Fish & WIldlife.
Jack
P.S. Don't be surprized if this battle is over and the 12,000 acres of Minnehaha are gone.
