9-year-old hunter hurt in ATV crash
Clarksville, TN ... A father-and-son hunting excursion in Woodlawn Saturday morning left a 9-year-old Dotsonville boy injured after the pair's all-terrain vehicle overturned.
Timothy James and his son Owen James, both of Haynes Road, were hauling a deer on the back of the four-wheeler around 8:30 a.m., when it flipped over because of disproportionate weight distribution, said Sheriff's Deputy Jesse Nugent.
"They had killed a deer on some property off Lylewood Road, the daddy was driving, the little boy was riding and they had put the deer on the back," Nugent said. "The daddy told me that when they were going up the hill, he could feel the front end getting lighter. That deer was apparently just too much weight."
The four-wheeler shifted backward and rolled on top of the the child, Nugent wrote in his report.
Timothy James drove his son to CK Outfitters on Dover Road, where they were met by Montgomery County Emergency Medical Service.
Owen, who was conscious and complaining of abdominal pain when medics arrived, was airlifted via LifeFlight medical helicopter to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville. He was in stable condition at the time, said EMS paramedic Melanie Martin.
"He had some possible internal injuries, which was the main reason we flew him out — as a precaution," Martin said. "For a 9-year-old, he was extremely calm — a real trouper. I was impressed with how good he did with the whole thing."
Nugent said Timothy James was distraught after the accident and was allowed to ride in the helicopter with his son.
Owen's condition remained stable at Vanderbilt Saturday evening.
