“Earn-A-Buck” was an agenda item at the NRC AC. It did not get much play though.
My written comment to them was short and sweet.

As far as making a meeting. I've made 4 or 5 in INDY over the years. Sorry, but I do try to pick and choose what is really important to me AND what isn't already cut and dried. I'm retired so I do not have to worry about time off of work and losing any pay. It does cost me a tank of gas and a 7 hour round trip. I do prefer teh 6PM starting time as I am on CST. That makes it 5 for me. I was well pleseased that we got out of the NRC AC meeting as early as we did. With that full of an agenda and I was really expecting twice as many deer hunters to show than did I already made plans to stay the night in INDY. I still didn't get home until way past my bedtime. The NRC AC meeting on deer was a MUST attend for me. In the case of the youth either sex hunt proposal I figured it was pretty well cut and dired or I would have been there too...

If the DNR really wanted Indiana sportsmen input they would have meeting in each part of the state instead of making us drive to Indy. Why not have one in Indy and then 4 more centrally located in each corner of the state so guys wouldn't have to drive so far? Start the meetings between 7 - 8 PM when most are off work. I'm sure there many shooting clubs and sportsman's clubs that have club houses and would donate there use for such meetings. I know I would if they want to come to Ft Wayne. Make it more convenient for guys to attend and you might be surprised how many are there. h.h.

The September meeting of the full NRC is:
September 22, 2009 10:00 a.m., EDT (9:00 a.m., CDT) Prophetstown State Park, Lafayette
Jack
P.S. This is the meeting where the NRC will finalize the deer housekeeping rule and the youth antlered deer rule from last week's hearing at McCormick's Creek.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. It will be close though. Bryan Poynter didn't see it as that big a change. Everything just pushed back one meeting.

Jackc, Well Jack oh buddy if I could get them changed I sure as the h--- would!!!!!!! Now as for as me making one at 6:00 pm....Hmmm let's see I get off work at 5 pm..so that would give me exactly one hour to make it from Mason Ohio were I work to say the one in Spencer Indiana...doubt if the State Police would let me geta way with that!!!!!!!!!! Make it more convenient for guys to attend and you might be surprised how many are there. h.h. What h.h wrote here is true,so why don't you see about getting them to look into this as you get to attend the meetings more than most on here do? p.s.//YOU DO A VERY GOOD JOB AT WHAT YOU DO!!!!!!

First, the meeting dates and times are not always set by DNR. Last week's meetings on deer were for the Natural Resources Commission and their legal department sets those times. The bird meeting of August 12th attended by 4 people from the public were for the Natural Resources Advisory Council and set by the all volunteer Advisory Council named by the Governor. The FWCC meetings we attend quarterly for the DNR are open to the public but public input is not accepted. We set those meetings for Saturdays.
The legislative summer study meetings last were split with 2 meetings in Indy, one in Pokagon State Park and one at the Falls of the Ohio last year. The legislature sets those meeting dates and times.
Overall I'd guess that the DNR has the opportunity to set meeting times for about 1/4 of the meetings I go to and about 80% are set during normal working hours. As someone said on here earlier it doesn't matter what day or what time you set the meeting for as someone will always complain.
Jack
P.S. How'm I doing, Keith?

One other thought....... WHy should getting meeting times changed be JACKS job? ?? Yea I know he gets like 150k to do all that he does and all but come on! You want the times changed I would say you have two options... Start another 7 page thread moaning about it or take the lead and make the changes you think are best for the highly over paid folks that take time out of their day to travel around the state to hold these meetings all to see that very few if any sportsmen show up....... In short. If it ought to be changed then make the calls and e-mails or better yet ATTEND one meeting and tell them........ See where it goes. Ok , I back on the bench.......... Im trying to get moles listed as a game animal. ANd NO I DO NOT SUPPORT OMR!!!!!!!!! ( One mole rule!)

As was pointed out in the meeting last week the OBR is what is until September of 2012. I wouldn't be too wound up about getting changed for another year or so. Now I don't feel guilty about hijacking this thread.

One other thought....... WHy should getting meeting times changed be JACKS job? ?? As Gundude replied above.....I thought that beings Jack is there for most of the meetings that he might raise his hand and ask if this could be done, now to me that doesn't sound to difficult of a job to be ask to do...plus I have sent e-mails ,made some phone calls to see why these meetings are held when actually no one can attend and talking to these people is like talking to a dogs a@@..you get nothing back but a bunch of hot air!!!!!!! And as a couple others on here seem to think that they should be changed also..one thought was beings JACK is at most meetings why couldn't he just ask?

....one other thought, on meetings, maybe we can voice our opinons through e-mails or mail in your ideas... ..(must have a license# of the appropriate subject), then we all could stay home with our familes. the meeting are like tele-checking ,its doesn't matter if i'm there or not!..they just need our input!!!! they(nrc) could get a better view of what our needs are for sportmans and sportswomen in indiana!! i don't see why i have to drive to voice my opinion in this day and age with all the high tech on the internet. the last meeting i went to was very educational, but lets get real, only 40 folks for hunting and 1000 e-mails sent in, thats not a fair representation of all the hunters" in indiana!...they(nrc) need more input and the meetings doesn't get the folks there!................just my two cents................................turkey scout

Here's the reality - emails are great up to a point. However the members of the committee don't see the emails until they are passed on from DNR staff. Impossible to ask an email a question and yes the meetings are mandated by statute so all decisions are made in those meetings. If 4 people show up to discuss bird hunting and one of those folks is against hunting altogether the committee or council is going to hear those folks and not the 20,000 bird hunters that stayed home even if 100 of them sent emails.
I will bring up the issue of dates and times but I already know the answers for most. The NRC and Ad Council members make the meetings to fit their schedules. Most are outdoors folks with jobs also who are volunteers. The hearings are a little more flexible by going around the NRC and Council but again the folks scheduling these will only go so far. If they have an evening meeting in southern Owen County to talk about deer hunting and 5 people show up they won't be encouraged to schedule something in Evansviile on a Saturday afternoon for the convenience of an extra 3 guys. Face it - when the sportsmen get active and go to these meetings they will try to accomodate us. Until then they will accomodate themselves.
We played who went to the smallest meeting the other day. I was second when I attended a meeting with 3 people to discuss the youth turkey season. Sandy Jensen obviously won with a meeting with one person in Madison, IN at Clifty Falls. That person came in as she was leaving but she stayed to get that person's input.
FYI - evening and Saturday meetings that require DNR staff also cost extra money as they get overtime just like anyone on here does. Has to be worth it to require it.
