Last year I started to pack in a small handheld solitaire game to my stand with me. I only bring out the game if I am outside of the time frame that I consider being "prime time". I am never too focused on the game not to hear a stick break or the rustling of leaves, etc. I have not been caught out of position because of the game as of yet but things can happen so dang fast in the woods that it may happen to me sometime down the road. I never bring the game out of my back pack during the last week of October through approximately the 20th of November. This is when I feel that the chances of seeing that shooter buck could happen at any minute of day light. Occasionally I will also grab my range finder and try to guess the distance to various objects around me. I feel that this helps me to be confident when I have to judge distances without the use of the range finder.

Early archery, I try to carefully control the mosquito population to pass the time. Does the therma cell really work? I would like some feed back from someone who has used one before i buy one. Yes, Themacells work. A very good investment.

Since buying some property I've found myself increasingly lazy, I don't stay out all day anymore, I usually just hit the peak periods. If I get bored I take a nap or head back to the house for awhile.

I alternate between scanning within 100 yds of the stand, and glassing surrounding crop fields and fencelines... taking a stretch break for coffee/snack 10 minutes every hour or so... Also glassing into the woods, looking for brown, racks, white flashes, motion... binocs really help you look through the woods rather than "at" it...

It's not the time on stand that I need to kill it's the time at work I need to kill when I should be hunting. I do bring my phone and look at pics of my boys for the long all day hunts. I will tell you the truth I do like the days that I plan on setting all day only to get cut short because of a good clean kill, but I love setting there all day almost as much.

I haven't brought anything in the past, but I'm kicking around the idea of bringing a good camera with me this year - seems like every season you end up seeing some interesting wildlife that would make for some good shots. I am kind of concerned that it would be distracting and the thing would get in the way though. Has anyone tried this? I always have my camera with me it the tree.

A little tetris on the cell phone for me (no sound). FYI...I would be careful about listening to anything while in the woods (MP3 player, CD, Etc). A deers ears are much better than ours so you might think you have it down low, but a deer will hear it.

I'm with you Trapperdave. I love to get out early and just watch, hear and smell the woods come alove around me. It also provides some great time to appreciate all that I have and to put the world behind me for awhile.

I bought a GOOD pair of binoculars and use them to glass the woods. The picture is much better, with no eye strain or blurred vision, so I see a lot more. I also watch other animals. I saw a squirrel about 40 feet up the tree next to me leap for another branch, miss it, and fall all the way to the ground. Never seen a squirrel fall before. That alone was amazing.

prime time I'm am standing and watching. when i get too bored or when i start trying to talk myself into getting down I read small paper backs I keep in my back pack or text friends.
Those early season typical dawn until 10 and 2 - dark sits arent too bad for just enjoying nature but Come Nov when i put in some serious hang time I need something to pass the time.

I think i am like most of you. I like to get out there settle in for the day and take it all in. Just enjoy the smells the sounds the wildlife. But most of all i think it's the time alone. Just you and your thoughts. Not having people asking you questions or bugging you . Its like getting to become one with all of God's creations. Being closer to Him. Oh, then there is the being focused thing. constantly looking after every twig snap, or rustle of the leafs. Even if i is only a chip munk or bird.
