Saw lots of birds. Tanagers, grosbeaks, warblers. 3 squirrels. Was going out this morning but the rain woke me before the alarm went off so turned it off and slept in. Big mistake as the rain had quit and it was a beautiful morning.

Who all bow hunts on the ground?? I used to exclusively, now, occasionally. I've killed 3 deer from the ground, my first deer ever, a buck, stopped at 8 yds from my blind. Deer can be killed from the ground, you just have to be extremely scent conscious, and extremely slow moving.

Yesterday afternoon, after I drove all the way out west of Danville (over an hour for me), got everything ready, tree stand on my back, picked up my bow and no release. I always leave it dangling from the string and had shot a few arrows yesterday morning, but I left it sitting on my deck in the back yard. It wasn't a wasted trip though, the farmer was cutting beans on 3 sides of the woodlot, so I probably wouldn't have seen anything anyway. Since I hadn't been into the woods since last Fall I did a quick walk through to check the paths and clear a few shooting lanes. I also stopped and talked to the farmer and got some info that might be useful later in the season.
All wasn't lost though..... I ran home and got the release and ran to a spot near my house. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go so I just took a stool and sat on the ground. I got pumped when I saw a HUGE track on the walk in. This print was one of the largest I've ever seen on hard ground....he has to be a monster. I sat on a fenceline just inside some woods near an oak that was dropping acorns. I had no action till 7pm when I heard movement coming toward me. My heart got pumping when a 6 pointer walked right past me at 10 yards. He never saw me as I was tucked back in a blowdown..... After I couldn't see in the woods I slipped out into the bean field to discover 5 deer feeding in the field 150 yards down from me. They hadn't spooked when I walked into the field so I took my time slipping out and left them unaware that I was even there.
Any trip that you see deer is a success in my book.....so it was a fantastic opening day, even with the extra long drive!

Sounds like a great trip Travis! I carry a bow glove (just switched to a release last year) in my pack just in case I pull a "Travis"! ;d

Hunting Perry County with my buddy. I took a hen with the crossbow yesterday morning at 11:00. We hunted deer yesterday evening and he saw 8 does, we both saw turkeys. This morning he shot a hen with his crossbow. So it looks like we're done with turkeys until next spring. Good luck to all, BOBinIN

Travis,
Many years ago I was hunting an area with a "large track". As the season wound down I killed a 2 1/2 year old six pointer... When I recovered him I noticed he had the biggest foot I had ever seen on a deer..
Hope your's is bigger...

Seen a 14" 8 point right off, then a large doe with younguns magically appeared under my stand without me noticing. I was instantly busted. She stomped, blew then took off circled back and blew again. Then took off blowing until she was in the next county . I figured my morning was over then a 4 pointer showed up less than 5 minutes later just milling around. Then another doe moved thru out of range. Then by 9:15 I made a unsuccessful shot on lone doe. Great morning but had other commitments and came out after that. Had a blast though!

Travis - don't feel bad... last year Veteran's Day, I drove up to Francis Slocum SF (nearly 2 hours), and had my climber, bow, arrows, insulated coveralls, boots... and my backpack was sitting by the door of my living room where I'd set it down because I forgot the coffee travel mug in the kitchen when I walked out... pack had all my calls, facemask, gloves, and of course, my license...
Ended up driving into Peru to get another license, got back and climbed a tree and it started raining... sat in the rain for 2 hours and didn't see anything...
Guess it's a part of getting old or being in a hurry, not sure which... :-)
