I have not seen a big increase in the size of the bucks actually over the twenty years I have been hunting the size of the bucks seems to have decreased. I have seen an overall increase in the number of deer both bucks and does. This may be the cause for smaller bucks due to over population. What county? Harrison

We saw alot fewer deer this year. It has gone down each of the past couple of years. However, this was by far the worst year as far as the number of deer seen.

Aaron There was a very bad case of EHD in Southern Indiana & Ky a couple years ago. This might be the reason you saw fewer Deer this past season.

lot less here but EHD a couple of yrs. ago did a number on them sightings down more than half but seems to be local Pike, Gibson, Switzerland, plus several other Indiana counties were hit VERY HARD back in 2007. I know a landowner up in Gibson Co. and he & his wife found 38 dead Deer in 2007 into 2008. Another landowner in Pike said most of the Deer on his propety were gone.

Deer numbers up this year in Madison Co, but not by much. I didn't see any super huge bucks just a couple in the 130's. The warmer weather during the deer season really pushed my large bucks nocturnal. Too many people enjoying the nice weather pushing deer. The buck to doe ration is getting better.

I thought Steuben County was way down last year. Maybe due to the late corn harvest though.

I still see around 400 deer a year with about 600 hours spent the woods each year. I hunt Jefferson/Switzerland mainly. I also hunt Jackson/Jennings and have seen less there over the past few years.

I saw less deer last three years not only while hunting but also just being outdoors. I live in rural Pike County and it is rare to see a deer in my area anymore. Yes the EHD in 07 wiped out I'm guessing 50% of our herd in this area, but the antlerless permits hasn't helped matters much. Prior to 07. I could easy go out in the evenings and see 30 deer each outing. It's nothing like that now.

My suggestion would be to make it a "Bucks only" County or close it to Deer Hunting for a few years and go from there.

I say down overall. But I hunted some new ground, and there were lots of deer. I think the places I have been hunting are getting all run over by quads all the time... and it runs the deer off.
Martin, Lawrence, and Orange counties.

I asked the IDNR about Pike county and here is what they said: We have to understand that we are not the only customers that the IDNR has. They do a very unique balancing act trying to please all customers even though these customers have conflicting wants and needs. I've got say that seeing 30 deer in an evening hunt might just be an indicator of too many deer.
