Have about 6 acre's in total. Approx. 3.5 acre's in imperial whitetail clover another acre in imperial whitetail alfa rack. All are doing awesome with all the rain we have had. Deer are using heavy. Did try a new product this year imperial whitetail powerplant. Made big mistake by not burning plot's off with roundup prior to tilling and planting. About 2 acre's in total came up well but grass unfortunately is doing better. I don't beleive i can spray now??? Has sunflower's, field peas, another type of bean also some sohrgum i beleive. Anyone know for sure about spraying? Did spray clover and alfa rack with great result's first May. planted power plant May 7th.

Farmer just cut mine for hay. Might as well make some money off of them.

Is there anything that can planted in a LOT of shade and do any good? Tearing up some ground inside a sapling patch would be my only option.

Only thing I might do is next fall is plant some oat. When the leaves are falling some sun light will work its way through. Plus oat or wheat seed is pretty cheat.

Omegahunter. You have several option's just checked a new chicory and clover plot this morning. Have a couple red oak tree's on one end. The shaded area's actually are doing better than area's receiving full sunlight. My quess shaded area's retaining moisture a little better. So chicory's an option. Not familiar with your county but for hunting plot's here in Switerland county turnip's are by far the best. Deer love em, have had luck in shaded plot's and full sunlight plot's. Biologic's product is Full Draw. Whitetail institute's is Winter Green's and i beleive Shot Plus has a brassicus product. Have used all 3 with much success. Good luck.

This is my second year to plant food plots - Last year I just planted a little clover to see how it would do. It did OK last year so I planted some more clover this sear around my stands and the rest in pasture grass to keep cost down. The new clover is coming up well, but the clover from last year is doing 5 times better this year than last year. Some spots the clover is knee high etc. Anytime I plant clover will the second year be better than the first? I added a mineral block this weekend and will be mowing in the next couple weeks to keep the weeds down.

I have planted turnip's in summer, but unless your planting a large patch the deer will probably eat them up before hunting season. Still they are a high protein source. For hunting plot i usually plant mid august to 1st sept depend's on ground mositure.

Thus the second year could be better than the first. I've been told to use fertilzer the first time it is planted, but it is not necessary after that. Anyone else??

clover should be fertilized in the fall with 0-20-20. it does make its own nitrogen. clover plots last about 5 years max and then need to be re-planted. h.h.

when is the best time to plant turnip's? i was thinking the end of this month would be good to have them still there for late season. what do you guy's think?? thanks mid august to late august, depending on how much rain we get. i always try to plant between the 12 - 15th of august and just before a rain if possible. use plenty of fertilizer for best results. last year we had plenty of cool weather and rain and some of the turnips in my plot weighed over 5 lbs each. h.h.
