My yard is terrible. It is the worst that it has ever been. Brown as can be and cracks in the dirt. I thought about watering the heck out of it and then power seeding grass seed, but it would cost me a king's ransom to get the ground to where it would sprout seeds.
It does not look like rain for quite awhile so I might out this off until next spring - although spring planting leaves a lot to be desired.
How late can I go this fall and still get grass to grow?

It really dependes on the weather. I have installed lawns as late as Nov 1 and had somewhat OK sprout. The next good rain we get, Woody you need to get the lawn power seeded as soon as it stops raining. Keep it watered WELL. Most people do not realize how much water it takes for fresh seeded lawns to survive. Usually a simple garden hose with a spay nozzle won't do it, unless you got all day.

We always aerate and seed after the first frost so there is no chance the seed will germinate then die in the frost.
The rain and snow drive the seed into the aeration holes.. makes a big difference in the spring

I just planted 1/2 acre of blue grass and cant water it..........that was a waste in time, seed and fertilizer.
Up north it said to fall plant grass seed from Aug 15 - Sept 15 so the seed would root before the freeze. Where you live Id say you could plant up to mid Oct and be OK. Unless the lord decides to give us some needed rain soon I'm going to re-plant need spring. h.h.

The ground right now is like concrete with cracks in it..

Woody-you've got two options (and both of them are kind of already covered here): 1. Seed now, straw it and water the heck out it to get the seed germinated and established yet this year. Depending on the weather you might be able to do that yet in your area up until about mid October.
OR
2. Wait until the ground temperature gets back down below about 55 this fall and then power rake and seed it. The advantage to doing that is that the seed is there and waiting for spring rains and warmer temps-plus you won't have to wait for the ground to be dry enough next spring to work the seed in. Another advantage to seeding for the spring is that generally after a couple of mowings the grass is established enough to handle any kind of weed chemical you may want to use, but certainly don't use any pre-emergent next spring until you've mowed a couple of times.
Just my two cents worth....

Currently your grass is dormant, not dead, it will be back in the spring with renewed vigor. If you do plant seed and start to water it, you will have to continue to water it until adequate rains hit the area. Grass seed will lay dormant until the water starts germination.

Great Question Woody. Now my question is when do I spray for weeds and what do I need to use. I was told the 2-4D or 4-2D stuff would work but I've been waiting because I thought the grass would be to stressed. I want to make sure I kill off all the weeds I can. But I also don't want a brown yard... Thanks BB

I've used Trimec for spraying my lawn. Once in the Spring once everything is growing, but before anything goes to seed, and then I spray again the first of August with Trimec Plus. The Trimec Plus also kills crabgrass. I use a pull behind tank sprayer. The only PITA is figuring out how fast I have to set the speed control at to get the proper application rate.
I did that by figuring out how much my spray nozzles put out per minute (gallon milk jug to catch the spray, then measure), and using a GPS to get my ground speed set. I used straight water for testing. I've got about 2 ac that I spray.

Bringing this back up to the top for Woody Here's a link for the seed we use on campus that does pretty good for us: www.seedsolutions.com/products_pro_sports.aspxThere should be a dealer locator on that link too that may give a store close to you that handles that product...if nothing close at least you will have an idea of what to look for. I'm certainly not a turf expert but I do have real good resources that pretty much can answer about any question. ;D

I know that you can't plant it as late in the fall as you can in the summer........ unless you got a pretty good flashlight!
Now, keep in mind that my only agricultural knowledge comes from a brief stint in chicken farming. None of them growed! I think I planted 'em too deep!
