Well, I don't know what to say.......I think congrats is in order on the kill but, I would like to disagree with your aging technique. Judging by the pic, this deer is young. Deer teeth can be bad just like ours and by the sounds of it that is what you are seeing. Therefore, you should secondary age it. There are several ways to age a deer and teeth are a good way but, can be misread. I'm not trying to rake anyone over the coals and a Big Congrats on the kill but, this deer, from what I see now in the face, is no more than 2 years young. Good Job tho!!!!

That deer looks for all the world to be 1.5 years old. I will say he is pretty chunky, and IF it weighs 197 lbs it would be the first time I've ever seen a rack like that on a deer even 2.5 years old, let alone 5.5. I've never seen an older deer with such small main beam diameter.

his burrs tell a different story as they are 1/8" smaller than half dollars, he would have had a big rack but it has been dry here, anyway after a year dry spell i filled my tag, i have meat that's all i care about, because that's why god put them here for, food.

I have an OLD buck on a trail cam. Very gray faced, sagging belly...you can just tell he's been around the block several years. He's still a monster 8 though and will probably die of old age or worn out during the rut. I've been hunting him hard since October 1 and haven't seen him or his 11 point pal once in the daylight. I've been told a mature buck's antlers will typicaly have a spread as wide or wider than the distance from tip of ear to tip of ear. Is this true?

A 5.5 year old with that small of a rack, or a 200 lb yearling. If either is true, it's still a memorable deer. Stranger things have happened.

Glad you killed one. Between the leasing properties, fur auctions, canning magic mud, taxidermy, and whatever new endeavors you have jumped into, I cannot believe you had time to go out and kill a deer. If we would have had a wet year I am sure he would have been a booner.

Do you actually believe the crap that you write? If so, I think you are the only one. You shot a dink yearling. There is nothing wrong with that. I have shot a bunch of them myself over the years. Just quit trying to pass it off as an old buck. And if you want to reduce the number of does, why don't you shoot some of those 135 deer that you saw at your grandparents place the other weekend.

FYI to all i don't care about age or rack size i'm just going by what the guy from the dnr told me, and furthermore i shoot two doe period, reason being that for every one buck you take two does, and besides it's nice to take an extra one and give it away but think about it before i ever give a deer to a food bank i would rather give it to a local family that needs it, every year i have given at least one deer when i could get away to someone that can use it, i'm not ever going to get greedy when it come to hunting for me it not to put a head on the wall as much as putting food on the table, that's why i hunt look at the picture of my 2007 buck he's big but i don't care about the rack other than it looks nice.
