I was at the check in at Versailles State park at 5am. I was about the 50th vehicle in line. I got to the saddle barn and only 1 vehicle was there ahead of me with 4 guys in it. They got out and asked me if I knew where I was going. I told them I had already picked out a tree and have the trail marked. They said ok and I told them a few other spots that were pretty good. I got to my tree around 545 and got all settle in. About 630 I saw several flash lights heading my way and I flashed them with mine letting them know I was there and they walked back about 50 yards and I could hear them climbing a tree.
About 710 4 shots which seemed right next to me about made me jump out of my stand. About 10 minutes later I spot a small buck coming my way. I wasn't gonna shoot him at first but I started thinking about all the hunters around me and I shot him at about 45 yards and he ran about 10 more yards and dropped. I decided to stay in my stand and hopefully a doe would show up. About 1030 I saw orange headed my way so I climbed down. The guy came up to me and asked me if I had shot and I said yea and walked over to the buck. He said "Yea, thats the one I shot too , there was white hair everywhere." I only saw one hole where I had shot and rolled the deer over and saw he had been gut shot. The guy said, well you dropped him so you can have him. Thats how it works right?
I said yea, pretty much and he walked off.
Talk about a nasty field dressing...
I got him all dressed, stuck a temp tag on him and walked my tree stand back to the truck and got the deer cart. Got him all loaded up and checked in. Talked to the DNR guy and he said I was the 9th deer checked in. He said he didnt figure too many more would be checked in since they took soo many in the 1st hunt.
I took the deer to the processors and headed home. Processor called me a few hours later and told me the deer had 3 big puss holes on its neck and one on its back after he had skinned the deer. He said he would not eat that meat and advised me to do the same. He said it had a horrible odor to it. I agreed and said thanks.
I don't know if those holes were from fighting or what but I didn't want to take any chances. The guy is a veteran hunter and processor and I trust him fully. If he wouldn't eat it, then I won't either.
I decided not to hunt today with the rain and all the idiot hunters out there.
