I put out a 50# bag of corn after season ended and put a trail cam over the pile. The deer would clean up the 50# in 2 days. They really hit it harder right before the big storms and colder weather. There was a good 20+" of snow on the ground and temps hit -18°F this winter. The deer really pawed up the forest looking for acorns as well, and the bushes right next to the house were hit hard also.
It was a tough winter for the deer around here, and feeding them what they will also pick up from the fields won't hurt. It's the feeding of stuff that they never see that'll kill 'em. They'll fill their bellies with the food, and won't have the bacteria in their gut to break down the food; they'll starve with full bellies.
The landowner wants to put in food plots this year, so next year will be even better.
