I went this morning and got in the woods about 7 AM. There wasn't much noise today but finally after a short walk i heard some cutting. I eased over to the hickory tree and watched for a while. Pretty soon i picked out two squirrels cutting nuts. I shot those two and two more, all out of the same hickory tree. The fifth one left the tree before i could get a shot. they were 3 males and one female. i hunted for an hour more and never saw a squirrel. i was out of the woods by 9 AM. i guess four is not to bad for opening day.

Nice job. My cousin called and said he got 3 this morning. The dork took them to my house while I was at work to clean them. Do not ask me why? The last few years, I've been skinning my squirrels as I shoot them. That way I don't have to dispose of any parts when I get home, plus they cool quicker and it's not a chore to dread when I get home. I just throw them in bread sacks or zip lock bags.

I gut them right away to start cooling them down...then skin them right before I leave the woods. Like you mentioned Decatur, breaks up the jobs so I don't have to do EVERYTHING when I get home.

Thanks for all the complements but squirrel hunting is not my favorite thing to do. I usually go a time or two and kill ten or so and then quit because i do know too many people who will take them. I use the step on the tail method to clean them so it don't take very long, wash them off at the pump and there done. The rifle is a Savage Mark II. It will shoot almost any ammo with great accuracy. For squirrels i like to use Remington Thunderbolts because if i miss their head it don't tear them up like hollow points do. I might go again in the morning to another woods. Good luck to all of you this evening. h.h.

Went out for about three hours and saw only three Squirrels. they were on Black Gum and Poplar trees. Very-Very few Hickory Nuts down here this season. The tree follage seem to be a lot thicker this year too! May have to use the .410 for early season and the .22 Rifle later on.

I went out yesterday afternoon. I saw/heard 6-7, and shot 2. The wind really put a damper on any serious hunting. It was fun though!

Wind is a cruel mistress. Only managed one out of a big beech. Heard quite a few more, but they were sitting tight.

I was to lazy to get up and go this morning but might this evening. This time of the year i usually see more squirrels in the morning more than in the evening. Id like to make a trip down to southern Indiana and hunt some grey squirrel since we don't have them up north. I think greys are better eating than a fox. h.h.

Saw three this morning....two were pinned up and never offered a shot, and one went home with me.
Saw a bachelor groupd of 3 bucks, all fairly young, but the biggest being a nice 8pt right at his ears but not real tall. Saw three other does, and a small fawn all by himself.
Nice cool morning up here and a beautiful blanket of fog. Felt GREAT to be back in the woods again!

Yesterday was the LEAST sweaty opening day of squirrel season I've ever experienced.

The humidity is nice and low today and the low tonight will be 60, so I am going to head out in a few hours. I was just in the woods Sunday, so I am going to recruit a 20 gauge with #6s to join me for fun in the thick foliage! ;D It is great to be heading out in pursuit of something again!
