I have just read your turkey season is over, i could do with some more turkey stories to be honest, No turkey hunting in the UK Question is when does your deer season start, is it bow first then firearms? what caliber rifles can you use, and i presume it is buck season next? straight barrels and arrows to you all stay safe Billy

There is the youth season on September 28th & 29th. The urban zone seasons runs from September 15th to January 31, 2013. Archery starts on October 1st and runs until January 6th, 2013. Shotgun/firearms runs from November 17th to December 2nd. Muzzle loader season runs from December 8th to December 23rd. There is also a special anterless season that runs December 26th to January 6, 2013, but only in those counties that have a quota of four or more anterless deer.
You are allowed one antlered deer during archery, firearms and muzzle loader season combined, but you can also take an additional antlered deer if you are hunting in an urban zone. You can take as many anterless deer as allowed in the county you are hunting. There are also all of the special draw hunts that take place at various state parks/wildlife areas around the state. I believe you can take another additional antlered deer during these hunts.
Rifle calibers are typically referred to as pistol caliber rifles, .357, .44, etc.
Confused yet?

thank you goosepondmonster I certainly am confused. much easier here roe bucks april until end of october does november until march No limits set. one decides your own estate harvest any rifle of 243 and above just what the police allow you to have so i would not be allowed to use my 308, that seems strange to me. shotgun normally only for humane dispatch of road casualties in the U k good job we are all different or it would be a boring world

For rifles used in hunting deer the bullet must be at least .357 caliber, the brass must be at minimum 1.16" and maximum is 1.8" in length. Yeah; I think they used the federal govt's tax code as a model for IN's deer regulations. Every state is different so you have to know the quirks of everywhere you hunt. Fortunately they aren't all quite as screwy as this one's.

Sound a rel minefield to me I can not understand the reasoning for it at the moment, dead is dead, the quicker it happens the better as far as i am concerned
Usual calibres here are 243, 270 308, 30 06, some of the continerntals that come here to stalk bring other calibres, like 7x57 etc The lads on red deer tend to favour the 270, although i have no complaints about the 308, its done everythng i have asked and more. Looks like your deer are safe from me then hehhehe regards Billy

As I understand it, the idea was to have limited range guns. Either for supposed safety (of course it really doesn't work that way - but myths die hard) or to limit the harvest. For me it isn't an issue as the 2 places I hunt in IN you would be hard pressed to find a 100yd shot - my long range hunting is in KY and I can use any of my favorite centerfires down there. (ie 260, 270wsm, 30-06, 35 Whelen, 444 etc.)

From what I'm understanding, one of the biggest differences is the number of people that hunt here compared to there. Our license sale are around 250,000 each year with harvest numbers around 100,000. We have mostly privately owned land with hunters on almost every parcel plus the public land with lots of people on each parcel.
I'm sure several people on this board would be thrilled to host you if you ever chose to come to the west shore of the pond. Like Dave said every State has their own rules, so your .308 is legal in places over here but I don't know how tough the firearms air travel rules are.

Ye there must be an lot more hunters over there This may shock you but over here we have no game liscence, it was costing more to give out than they were getting back in. The dog liscence went the same way All we have is a firearms liscence, There is no public hunting land here it is all privatley owned. At some point i would love to have a trip over to the west shore and see how things are done first hand, The air travel is usually no bother it is importing it into another country. For instance if we were going to South Africa we would get a dierct flight otherwise we have to inmport and export it out of usually Germany, they tell me Holland has become very strict they have been taking broadheads etc from hunters Likewise if anyone comes over here give me a shout, we can always sort somethng out, nearly always something in season over here, birds or deer regards Billy
