drs, All Fox squirrels, I see very few Grays in my local area. Down here we have around 40% fox & 60% grays.

Way to go Dane, sounds like that Old Kimber is still shooting O.K..Got up this morning and drove 16 mile north in Vermillion county and was in the woods at daylight.Loaded the old H&R .410 single shot with 3 inch #5 shot and snuck to a shag bark hickory. The cutting in this tree sounded like rain splatters .Shot 2 from this tree and was back at the truck at 20 till 8.They were both Fox Squirrels, one young and one was last years Squirrel. All ready had a mess of Squirrel legs, cat head bicuits and gravy. It doesn't get much better for me.DRS good luck on your opening day.

Thanks! I also have an old H&R single barrel in .410, which I had since 1969. I think I'll take my Stoger Uplander S/S .410 Saturday morning. Will switch to my CZ .22 LR later on when the leaves thin out a bit.

Gosh guys, You're making me remember a long time back to when my Dad & Mom bought me my first gun. It's a .410 J. C. Higgins 3" single shot break-over. It was a used gun and seems like they paid $15 for it. I may have to get it out and take a squirrel with it just for "old times sake" LOL! Thanks, have a geat time in the woods.

Interesting thing about squirrels is that they will migrate as much as 50 miles if there is no mast for them. They do this in large groups often. So, if your whacking squirrels, there is still some mast for the deer and turkeys.

So Timex, If I stop seeing squirrels on my place, that means they have eat all of the mast already, which means none left to drop to the ground, which means the deer & turkey will have no mast left for them, which will mean i'd better get busy and put out a few more acres of food plots, because my mast is alot less them normal due to the drought. Thanks for the info..

lwb, Hope the wife is doing ok and gets well soon, from what i've heard a kidney infection can be very painful. My wife had an appointment Tues at the cancer center in Indy. I told her it's a good thing is wasn't Wed. because I wouldn't be able to take her due to it being opening day of squirrel season and I hadn't missed opening day for years, but after the look I got, I was quick to tell her, hey, I was just kidding. Gotta take care of the women cause they put up with us men. Again hope your wife is doing ok &! Good luck next week-end.

Took my daughter hunting this morning and can honestly say I've not seen that many squirrels in a long time. We shot 5 out of 2 different hickory trees in about 30 minutes. The last 3 were shot in less that 5 minutes. Now i've never been very fond of squirrel, or at least the ones i prepare, but this year that has changed. I'm not sure why I never thought of this before but after cleaning them i decided to soak them in a brine 3 hours before I fried them. Wow! What a difference that made! So much for straight up frying them or cooking them in a pressure cooker. Very tender, juicy and oh so delicious. I'll add the brine recipe to the recipe section if anyone wants to try it.

I took my 6 year old grandson Jase this week end and he managed to bag his 1 st squirrel. We found the squirrels in shag bark hickory mostly but they were also cutting oak. Some of the shag bark hickory has already been cut out but new trees are are just begininig to be cut.The squirrel population seems good in 2 different woods that we hunted.

Has anyone hunted Morgan Monroe... I was recently PCS'ed to Indy from FT Rucker, AL, and have an 8 year old that loves to put his 28 guage to the test squirrel hunting but the Army seems to have robbed us of a hunting spot once again... We were spoiled in AL with being able to walk out the door on post and hunt...

Can't speak for the Morgan-Monroe area, but the four woods I have been to so far in Daviess County is chuck full of squirrels.

Omegahunter, There is a woods where three generations of my family hunted Squirrels. Located off HWY 257 South and on County Road 725. Just wondering if you are hunting in this area of Daviess Co. I've shot many-many Fox Squirrels throughout the years in that woods. Last time I hunted there was in September 2007, usually got my limit each time I went. I sure miss it!! The owners and even their sons are now deceased, with the last Son dying this past Spring.
