Omegahunter, There is a woods where three generations of my family hunted Squirrels. Located off HWY 257 South and on County Road 725. Just wondering if you are hunting in this area of Daviess Co. I've shot many-many Fox Squirrels throughout the years in that woods. Last time I hunted there was in September 2007, usually got my limit each time I went. I sure miss it!! The owners and even their sons are now deceased, with the last Son dying this past Spring. Don't think I know anyone with woods on Ebenezer Cemetary Road, but I have been hunting just east of that in Glendale F&WA. Been walking way back away from the parking areas and finding LOTS of squirrels so far. My two favorite sections had someone in them the other day and I had to go to a section I had never been and still got 4 before it got too hot for me to be out there.

You were not hunting all that far from where I use to hunt Squirrels. I believe I have hunt, a couple times, also in the same area as you are currently east of Glendale F&W. The woods I hunted on 725 is about two miles from HWY 257. You turn left just past the Ebenezer Cemetery road go two miles on 725. This was the very first place & main place I hunted Squirrels. The owner's wife was a patient of my Father. She passed away last year. My Grandfather first took my Brother and I with him hunting back in 1956!! My last time to hunt there was in September 2007. LOTS & LOTS of GREAT memories there.

Over that much time I bet you knew every tree in there and every squirrel-shaped knot on every branch!

Over that much time I bet you knew every tree in there and every squirrel-shaped knot on every branch! Yep! I sure did. I knew that woods & area like "The back of my hand". Over in the "Older Woods" (my Granddad called it the "Old Woods") there is a grove of Beechnut trees that I hunted in late August through the middle of September. The first part of the area there is (or was) a lane, running through the "New" Woods (again this is what my Granddad called it) that was mostly Hickory trees and it bordered a cornfield. That place was real HOT in early Squirrel Season. I also shot several Groundhogs there as well and shot my first Coyote back in 1990. Never saw very many Deer there and that has always been a mystery to me.

My first outing this season I got mostly grays and they were all in Beech. The rest of my harvest has all been in Hickories except the very last fox squirrel last Saturday morning was in an Oak.

Very few Beech trees where I am now living. Squirrels here are currently on Pignut, Pine cones, & Oak trees. Took my .22 rifle out this morning for a couple of hours, seeing three Grays. Couldn't get a clean shot of at any so I let them walk or "climb".. ;D. Noticed the Squirrels down here are on the move more than last week.

Seems like the squirrels are almost in a later fall mood. I took 5 this morning, 1 in a hickory, 1 on a pignut, one out of an oak, one just barkin up a storm and the last 1 was on the ground and made the mistake up running up a tree in front of me. Most of them were moving alot just to find a another nut I guess, a couple even changed trees before they stopped long enough to get the crosshairs on them. I was "almost" wishing i'd took the scatter gun instead of the .22 LOL! All were fox squirrels.

I find that Grays are harder to hunt than Fox Squirrels with a rifle. I remember when I lived in Indiana, I used a rifle most often for Fox Squirrels. Used my .22 Hornet with a reduced load & my .25-20 Win. with cast lead bullets, to drop those big Fox Squirrels out of the tops of Beech Trees. We can't use centerfire ammo on Squirrels down here in Ky, for some unknown reason, only centerfire shotgun shell loads or rimfire .17 or .22 rimfire ammo.

Took the single shot 20 gauge with me this morning when I went to scout/check stands. Shot one grey and seen 4 others. All were cutting on hickory's.

I read an article where squirrel populations that year are effected by food availability from the year before, I wouldn't expect to see huge decreases until next year, if we have any.

Bagged me a nice big Fox squirrel today, just finished up cleaning and the meat is soaking right now. My friend and I are freezing our meat for a few weeks and are going to have a friends and family old fashioned Squirrel fry.

Another Fox Squirrel this morning. I can't seem to get more than one at a time a local friends house lately, so I'll just wait until this weekend at Atterbury.

After we quit deer hunting Sun. am Johnny did a little squirrel hunting. He made a poor hit on one and it climbed up to a Y to die. He tried shooting him out of it with the 22 - no luck so I told him get me the deer rifle. I can now tell you a 357Maximum will get them out of a tree, and the won't be worth keeping; you 'Yotes owe me!

Went hunting with my friend this past Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday at Camp Atterbury wasn't so great. Missed a couple in the first hour or so and then they were non-existent for the next 3 hours. Sunday morning was a very nice hunt. Great weather, squirrels were moving wonderfully. We were able to bag 4 great sized Fox Squirrels and a small as well. Had a great weekend!

My 11 year old grandson and I got out this morning. We were using rimfires and managed to take 4 very fat and fluffy Fox squirrels.Quite a bit of chasing going on and it won't be too long before their breeding season.Great time to be out in the squirrel woods.

Put two nice does in the freezer, last weekend. Now I'm ready to go back to the squirrel hunting. Gonna give it a week or so for the deer hunters to thin out, then it's back to the limb chickens.
