Had a customer yesterday that was a big time trapper. Told me that last year he got a permit to sell live coons. Anyone know about this? My only question is what they would be used for. He told me he only caught 5 before he gave it up because quote, they are too dang mean. Course i cleaned the words up for this forum. I thought maybe training pens for dogs but figured they would just escape. Anyone???

Field trials usually use a live coon in a round cage, or a pet, to lay the trails for the compitition.

Be careful when dealing with Live Raccoons. Those things can be mean! I've caught two in the last year in my live animal trap and when I went to take the trap to the truck to transport them to another area for release they went wild.
I was lucky that they didn't come after me when I opened up the cage door to let them out.
They will bite and scratch you if you get too close to them.
BTW: what would someone pay for a live raccoon? I know how to trap them now.

We use to take live coon, fox and coyotes but mainly fox and coyotes. They would pay more for them alive because they had special pens that caught the urine so they could sell it for lure for fox and coyote, not sure what they used the coon for. We used special tongs that would fit around the neck on them so we could control their heads and get them out of the traps without getting bit. We would carry them with the tongs in 1 hand and the tail in the other. The tongs could then be used for getting them back out of the cages for transport to the buyer.

Couple years back I had two that were abandoned and we raised! They were the coolest little boogers!! We bottle fed them for about 3 weeks before they started eating good! They were escape artist to say the least, they could pick locks blind folded and get out of anything. Finally the neighbors dog killed one cause I could no longer handle them, then tried to give the female to a friend and when she came to look,, she bite her. So I took her out and turned her loose. Them things did not have feet,, they had 4 hands! If I lived in the country I would do it again,, but its kinda hard in the city!!!

When I was a teenager me and my brother had pet coons,he had a female that really never tamed down and I had a male that was real tame.We let them breed but the first litter she killed them all.The second litter we kept 3 for awhile. After awhile they escaped their pen. I think the male came back a few nights because the food disappeared but I never saw him again. I loved watching him catch crawdads I put in his water dish . Dad also raised pheasant and quail awhile but that's a different story .

Trapping year round we handle hundreds of live raccoons every year. Every male and a lot of females will try and bluff when you get close. Hissing, growling, and snapping at anyone who gets close. If that scares you too much you need another hobby. years ago there was a TV show that showed someone live trapping raccoons and keeping them in what looked like those big chainlink dog pens with roofs. It may have been that old Marty Stouffer Wild America. Those guys sold the live animals to running pens by the hundreds for the reason we all know. They WILL get out. But another fellow fed them and fattened them like a fur farm. Had dozens in each pen like chickens and was pouring in dog food.

The first time I turned it loose. It was not really feral as it was used to my neighbor's feeding it but it was an outside cat. They moved and left the cat behind so it was eating food that I threw out in the back yard. Old lunch meat that went bad was on it's menu along with some chicken bones and other spoiled or left over food. The second time I caught it was when I put some sardines in the cage and he went into the cage again as he was so hungry. I let him loose at a far of spot. Have not seen him back in the neighborhood since. He use to walk though my back yard several times at night and would set off my motion sensor and turn on my security light on the back of the house. That is the main reason I wanted him gone.

I know how to trap them now. Ever catch a cat? Old feral tom cats scare me when in a cage...I would take 10 coons at once over a cat Yes I did. Not sure how feral it was. I had some neighbors behind me that had a couple of cats who had kittens. These kittens were allowed to run loose. I have a picture on my Canon DSLR camera of one of those cats sitting in my bird feeder. I guess he figured the birds would come to him and he would have dinner. I also have a short video of him in the bird feeder. Anyway the neighbors moved away and left their cats behind to fend for themselves. I caught the yellow one in my HavaHeart Live Animal Trap and took him over to the wild life area where he could catch rabbits and mice or get eaten by the local coyotes and or Bobcats. Some ladies on Facebook made a comment about him. They were begging people to feed the little thing. I went over there one night to coyotes hunt around midnight and he came out from the bushes. He was friendly. I just didn't need any more cats in my neighborhood.
One of his little ones or her little ones was black and white. That is the one that I liked to watch try to catch the birds in my bird feeder. He was only about 6 to 9 months old and not very smart ...yet. He vanished after a while. I'm not sure what happened to him.
The yellow cat was not mean and was easy to transport and release. But I've seen was a Cat Bite Looks like and they are nasty. My mom's neighbors years ago had Siamese cats that were mean at times. One day the cat was terrorizing the kids so they asked my mom for help as both their parents were at work and they were home alone. Mom when over to their house and put a trash can over the top of the cat and was trying to move the cat and trash can from the hallway into a bathroom where she could shut the cat in the bathroom until the parents got home. I'm not sure why my mom tired to do this but she was trying to protect the kids from the cat. Anyway the cat got out from under the trash can and leap up on my mom's leg and bite her really hard. She had to go to the hospital and get treatment for the cat bite as it was getting infected. That was the last time she ever went over to that house again.
I've never been a cat person until around 1997 when the remodeling company that I worked for had two kittens given to them. They were kept in the office where I worked and they would entertain me though out the day. I would be working on Quick Books at the computer and they would get up no the top of the desk and try to get me to pet them while I was typing. So I watched them grow up for little kittens until they were about a year old. Before that time I'd just as soon shoot a cat as to pet one. I grew up with dogs when I was younger and had no love of cats. But my opinion of cats changed after having the kittens in the office/house for a year. They had the run of the house that year. They never were allowed to go outside even though they tried.
Another cat that I encountered was at the bait shop. He was the bait shop owners son's cat. Matt and I would talk while he was counting the minnows and the cat would jump up on the counter and want to be petted. He seemed friendly enough so I'd pet him and talk to Matt at the same time. One time when I was not looking at the cat and petting him he turned on me and tried to bite me. I heard him hiss at me and never did figure out why he got mad. Once minute he was letting me pet him and the next he was going to attack me. After that I just ignored him when I went to buy my minnows. His loss I guess.
