Any signs of EHD this year?

It was about this time last year when I was plucking the first doe out of a pond that had fallen victim to EHD. Lost several more deer last year as well as others I know. Anybody seeing any signs of it this year?

I have not seen nor heard of any. Totally different summer this year than last.

I saw an article last week that said EHD wasn't nearly as bad this year as it was last year. It was speaking to the issue on a national level, but I think the same applies in our corner of the world.

I was worried last week about EHD. Creek was extremely low and starting to pool. Just the right setting for EHD to come busting out again. Got some rain and creek levels back up and flowing.

Nothing so far that I have seen in Miami County, Fulton or Cass. But it's still possible, we got hit in Sept last year.

I have been out of the office a lot lately, so I apologize for my delayed response.

We have confirmed EHD in a buck in Delaware County. I am actually not aware of any other reports in that area, but the buck that was tested was a very nice, mature deer, so it was of interest to the landowner who found it to get it tested. We have also sent another sample in from Daviess County just recently. Those results won’t be available for a couple weeks, but the landowner has found about a dozen deer on his property, so it seems to be a discernible outbreak in that area. I personally have not had any other reports statewide from wild deer, but the BOAH has confirmed EHD in a captive herd somewhere in the northern part of the state. They have not divulged exactly where, and I am trying to find out.

There is a general majority consensus amongst biologists in other states is that last year the area’s most affected by EHD were confirmed to have serotype 6, a relatively new and exotic strain of EHD. This corresponds to what we saw in Indiana last year, and is my general feeling. I suspect that if this strain of virus appears on the landscape, localized herds will be hit hard.

Sounds bad. I hope that it gets isolated or contained somehow, if it's even possible. I will just have to keep my eyes open. Do they recommend having dead deer tested so they can get an idea of where it is or do they not really want to be bothered with it?

If it is not tested within 24 hours they can not tell if it is EHD or not. They still need to hear about dead deer. They list them as "suspected EHD deaths".

yep...ponds are getting low...my yard is turning brown in spots,.

The lake is down a foot, the creek is no longer running and no rain in sight. Just right for an outbreak.

I spoke with DNR Wildlife Biologist Rick Peercy (?) yesterday and he said that yes, EHD is rearing its head again this year. He said that Switzerland was one of the counties with, suspected-not confirmed, cases. Not only has it been dry down there but all of central IN has been extremely dry.

Thanks for the link. Can’t open it on a state computer, so I will have to look at it at home.

I have reports from Noble, Daviess, Jackson, Dearborn, Ohio, and Switzerland. We have confirmed EHD in Delaware Co. We have submitted or are in the process of submitting samples from Daviess and Switzerland County. It sounds like for most locations, the reports are only of one deer here and there. The exception is in Daviess County, where an outbreak has seemingly occurred in a very small area.

We got over an inch in Switz. county so far today, so should help out a bunch. Currently have flood warnings out, so that should clean out the creek's....

Just watched a 10pt swim a lap in my lake while on the front porch cleaning fish. He ran off to the bean field. Hope he just wanted to take a dip, but something tells me otherwise.
