If not, you are missing out! I'll start out by saying that getting into quality air guns requires a respectable investment. My air gun of choice cost more than my Kimber .45 and, believe me, I have no regrets. However, you can get a perfectly acceptable gun and hand pump for $600 or so, without scope. Or, a good spring gun will go for as little as $300.
The pre-charged pneumatic guns that I have are mouse-fart quiet and I can shoot them all day long in the back yard without worry of alarming the neighbors. As an added bonus, you can get 500 pellets for as little as $10 at Wal-Mart, Kmart, etc all day long. I have not seen .22 rim fire at a reasonable price for months.
I shot five greys last Saturday and they were all in Hickory trees that contained multiple squirrels. The survivors NEVER stopped cutting while I eliminated their buddies.
I will be glad to expand this thread and provide more info. if anyone is interested.

I was thinking about it until I read your post. I thought I could get a decent air gun for $100 bucks. If those aren't any good then I'll steer clear of them. No way can I justify spending $600 or even $300 for a gun I can only hunt squirrels with. I'm glad you posted this though. I was pretty close to buying a cheap one.

I have the GAMO "Silent Cat", I think $140 at Wal-Mart. It is the .177 caliber, and is supposed to shoot the fancy alloy pellets at 1250 fps and the regular pellets at 1000 fps. I usually shoot the regular pellets, since they are cheaper and quieter (slower = sub-sonic).
I have killed a few squirrels with it, hit the last one in the shoulders and it was a pass through (about 10 yards). Really limited to close shots on squirrels though, I don't think it has much punch out past 30 yards or so. Pretty accurate, I can hit a pop can at 40 yards every time with a rest, not a lot of drop, but it barely knocks the can over.
It is reasonably quiet; the spring does make a "thunk" sound when you shoot, about the same volume as my old Bear compound.
I don't regret buying it, it is fun and cheap to shoot in the backyard.

$100 will not get you much. Air guns are like any other tool with regard to quality, features, and cost. Mine is deadly accurate at 50 yards and will go out to 100, but I have not taken the time to practice and get proficient. Squirrels only? Not me. I shoot starlings and sparrows every chance I get. I know a farmer that would buy the pellets for me if needed. I can also shoot in my backyard all day long without attracting any attention.

I shoot squirrels with a common Daisy 1000 .177 springer, it can punch a 4 grain wadcutter pellet straight through a starting fluid can at 25 yards, and a squirrel's brain pan at up to 40. It was about $100. Considering the low weight of all pellets, I would consider shots over 40 yards somewhat dicey, regardless of the pellet type or muzzle velocity.

I was deer hunting yesterday and saw the most squirrels I have seen all my sits ever...dozens. Chasing, fighting..etc. I always bring my break action with me so I went and grabbed it lol. Shot two squirrels with it yesterday. It is absolutely legal. Hollow point 17 at 1400 ft per sec

As for BB guns, I am uncertain. Not sure what the requirements are. I would think as long as it could ethically kill a small game critter. Like I said my break action is more accurate than most firearms and shoots 1400 ft/sec. Most BB co2 charged BB guns don't shoot near the velocity of a break action. But hell...I used to kill squirrels with a sling shot

I've got lots of squirrels and several rabbits in my yard. I live in Greenwood and have 1 acre with trees and backs up to a RR. Nice big hill with trees blocks the tracks, which makes a nice back stop for sighting in my crossbow. My neighbor tells me that it's illegal to shoot a BB gun let alone kill something where I live. I'd sure like to knock off a few squirrels and rabbits in my yard, but haven't.
This week my daughter saw a buck in our driveway; she was afraid to get out of the car ...she's a city girl.

During my second surgery recovery my son knew I was out of action for deer season so he gave me a Ruger air rifle to pop squirrels in my yard. It works great. I have thought about getting a nice Quackenbush air rifle for deer hunting just on a whim just to try it one time...but so much cash for an air rifle is just beyond my comprehension at this time. Wish I had someone close by who could loan me one or take me out with one to try it before I spend the big bux. I could likely be convinced pretty easily...lol Saw a really great looking one in 40 caliber I like a lot.
I have seen videos of guys on Africa safari using nothing but air rifles for big game.

FWB 124D. 7.9g pellet at 930 fps. Works great, and has for going on 40 years. Had it resealed twice and it's due again. But, those PCP's with a good moderator are the way to go!!

Here in the uk, air rifles are big business, we kill rabbits with them legally. Both my lads and myself cut our teeth hunting with them. After mum died I tried to soften the blow to the kids and I admit I wasted them but I bought them each a weiraugh 57 Springer air rifle, one night I was amazed as stuart cleanly harvested two rabbits one after the other at 40 yds plus, all head shot. The rifles over here are limited to 12ft lbs of energy unless they are on a firearms license, ours were 12ft lbs or less' Once I bought Stuart a shotguns, his air rifle went into my cudboard, fantastic tool for small game. Alexander traded his in for a more adult version. I go for springers, then there is no worry over divers air bottles etc Regards Billy

(5m/m) Blue Streak Model CB for my 12th Birthday; which is what I used to harvest my first Squirrel & Rabbit. I too was never a fan of those pellet rifles that used those CO-2 bottles, like Crossman marketed. Before receiving the Sheridan; I owned a Daisy Model 25 BB rifle, which accounted for many Starlings and Sparrows in my hunting area. Some of these newer pellet rifles are much more hard hitting than the ones I grew-up with. Over here they are called "Adult Air Rifles"

I just purchased a Crosman furyII in .177 and a Hatsan Sriker Edge in.25, also have a Crosman nitro piston .22 that will be here tomorrow, the .177 and .25 are extremely accurate although the included scopes are trash, gotta admit these new airguns sure aren't what we had as kids, and I look forward to tagging a few tree rats with them on my property.....which brings me to the question....Are air rifles legal to use on public hunting land?......and if yes, what game can be taken with them?..........Thanks,Steve
