Well, many of the western states' tag application deadlines have come and gone. I failed to draw a Wyoming elk tag, but should draw a decent mule deer and a pretty good antelope tag.
Anybody else heading west (or anywhere, for that matter) to hunt this year?

I wish. I'm still dreaming of the day I can go on a hunt out west. I'm going 100% DIY, public land this year. Last 2 years I have paid to hunt private, but trying to learn how to do it on the cheap. Will let you know how things turn out.

Good luck. They say pronghorns are one of the easier critters to chase DIY.

Waiting a few more days before I give CO my hard earned dollars. Putting in for the Uncompahgre Plateau, GMU61 2nd rifle season Muley tag. Been acquiring PP's and just maybe if I am lucky this year I might draw. Not holding my breath though. I had been planning to go to WY for an Elk hunt but my western connection for that deal decided to dump on me so that is off the table now. Thankfully he did so before I applied for the tag as I most likely would have drawn it.
LCHunter, you going to WY or?

LCHunter, you going to WY or? Yep. Put in for a Region D muley tag, GMA 32 first choice antelope. If it goes like last year, I'll have about 50-50 odds on that one. My second choice is a GMA 27 antelope. I should draw one or the other. Not expecting to see any monsters, but lots of accessable land and good animal numbers.

Most western states each have millions of acres of good public land. Some states out west have over 10 million acres of public land. There is some excellent hunting on public land out west.

What's with the fishing license?

LAWRENCECOUNTYHUNTER take this as a compliment, I and as well as others admire your MEAT EATER type of hunting.
To drive halfway across the USA,hunt and harvest an animal all by yourself is admirable. I like the television show MEAT EATER because he uses the same kind of attitude you display.

Dont forget your hunter education card when going to Colorado its the Law I was born in 50 and needed it If you do go there, even on a vacation, take your hunter education card with you and stop in any of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife offices. Have them photo copy the card and put attach it to your file. That way you won't have to carry it with you when you hunt. You can only do that in person, and with the orig certificate/card. I did that last year when I was there. Mine was issued by California, and there is no state record of it if I lose it. Co P&W have to see the real thing, not a copy. Now I can leave the orig at home when I'm hunting there.

I think it was in the mid 70s. We came in from the south by Montrose. We hunted the east side of it mostly. I do know we had to make several trips into town as the friend I was with had mud "balloon" tires on his Blazer and they did not hold up well on the rocks we were navigating. We didn't kill anything but had a blast doing it. www.google.com/maps/place/Uncompahgre+Plateau/@38.6645337,-108.5198999,9z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x874768b308dcb401:0xd66e22fe33492ac6

He killed a 5X5 buck. He went with a small group that had been going many years to the same drainage, Campbell Creek, up above Nucla, CO. They had managed to make friends with a fella who lived in Nucla and so they would park their vehicles at this guy's place and take the Willys Jeep they towed out up into their campsite. Dad is chomping at the bit to get back to that part of CO and I am really excited to get their as well as I really think the Uncompahgre is a very special place. If we don't draw it this year we should get it next year. Just hope Dad's health holds up so he can enjoy the trip and hunt. Woody, I would be interested to know more about where you camped and hunted when you were there. I am inclined to want to setup camp up on top of the Plateau for better mobility in lieu of down in a drainage like Dad did in 70. Thanks for the tip on the rocks, I am due for new tires on the truck and I think I will make sure I get a tire with a better than normal sidewall.

Oh my... I don't remember where camped for sure. It was on top and down towards the south end, then we dropped off in several drainages to hunt. Not much help .. Sorry .

Been in Area 62 several times,80's and 90's, never killed anything, but had a good time. Roads were OK then, except one year a mini blizzard came in we left early and had a hard time negotiating until we go off the high country.

Most western states each have millions of acres of good public land. Some states out west have over 10 million acres of public land. There is some excellent hunting on public land out west. This is true about public lands out west, as there is plenty of room to hunt. I've been on several Hunts in Western Colorado and in Washington State in past years, for several species of Big Game. In Colorado, I mostly hunted on private property in Delta & Montrose counties in Western Colorado.
