What's the best way to keep from getting bitten by deer ticks or dog ticks. What type of insect repellants do you use and which ones work the best
Do you spray your hunting cloths with something before you go afield? If so what do you use and how do you apply it. Do you soak it heavily or just lightly.
I think about tucking my pant legs inside my socks to keep them from getting to my ankles.
I use Deet for repelling Mosquitoes or use a Thermocell device to keep the Mosquitoes at bay.
I never worried too much about ticks when I was younger but now that I know that they carry Lyme's disease I'm more concerned with the smaller deer ticks. I've got enough problem with join pain now and don't really want to get Lyme's disease from a tick bite. I know several people that have been diagnosed with that disease who live in the neighborhood. It's a chronic disease that is hard to cure if you don't catch it early. It takes a lot of antibiotics to kill it.
I'm going to the store today and I'm going to pick up some fresh insecticide for ticks.
Last year I found a lot of them on me and I see them crawling towards me at the fishing ramp. They are on the damn concrete and moving towards me. I had two crawl up my pants while I was standing on the cement casting at the launch ramp. A few years before that I was sitting in a folding chair near a small cypress tree and saw three ticks hanging on the pine needles trying to reach for me. I was only about a ft away and they could detect my CO2 from my breath. They are aggressive and not as slow as you think. They can move pretty fast when they want to.

I treat all my clothing with permethrin and repeat the process based on how many days I'm out.

Permethrin. First year using it but won't be my last. Many days turkey hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting and didn't find the first tick crawling on me til my last time out and it was crawling on my untreated shirt.

Great To the store to buy some Permethrin. I had heard of that stuff but could not remember how to spell it LOL.
Do you combine it with some Deet for ticks and mosquitoes? Or does the Permethrin work on mosquitos as well as ticks.

It's supposed to work on mosquitoes as well but I always have my thermacell with me. I used it in Canada while bear hunting and skeeters make touch and go landings on the pants legs.. They don't stick around.

99.5 ml of water to 0.5 ml of the stuff? That will go a long ways. Thanks for the tip.

I use either Deep Woods Off or Repel "Sportsmen Max" (40% Deet) to keep ticks and mosquitoes off me. Using Permethrin on your clothes could be harmful to your skin and health as it would still be available for your skin to absorb it. Remember Permethrin is an insecticide rather than a repellent. Be Careful! I've never used it due to this fact, even on any clothes I would wear in the woods.
What I do is spray either Off or Repel on my pants legs and tuck them inside my socks. Also spray my hunting shirt all over and even my hat. If you wear tennis shoes or any light weight shoes other than regular hunting boots or snake boots; when you return home from hunting, place them in a plastic bag and into your freezer over night to kill any ticks that might be "lurking" in the folds of your boots or sneakers. Down here in Kentucky, we have tiny ticks called Turkey Mites and they are everywhere along with regular ticks. We however don't have that many mosquitoes as we're not in a river valley, in my part of the County. Closer to Green River Lake is where you find mosquitoes here.

Wearing long sleeve under layers should help avoid skin contact. I only treat boots and outer layers.

I been using Permethrin-based products for about 15 years now and have yet to find a tick on me while hunting in those clothes. I spray it on the outside of my outside layers and let it dry. At the end of turkey season, clothes go in the wash and then get hung in closet. I spray it once when I start scouting a week before season and never have to worry about ticks while I'm hunting. It's proven itself to me, for what its worth.
