"However, when it comes to playing the elk tag lottery, you might be better off at Churchill Downs. According to the Fish and Wildlife Department, last year one of every 134 resident applications was drawn for an antlered gun tag (for nonresidents it was 1 in 627)."
I quit donating several years ago. Not worth it.

Only worth it if you look at it as a $10 donation, with no expectation of actually drawing. Myself, I often spend $10 for a sandwich and a blizzard at DQ, so I'll continue the gamble

You can't win if you don't enter.

As for being drawing, your chances are mighty slim. But, if you can forgo that Burger & Blizzard, might as well use that money for a Ky Elk Draw, which is better healthwise.

Yes the odds are slim. But I also look at it as $10 donation with no real hopes of being drawn. I'd take it as pleasant surprise if I got picked. I view the Pennsylvania draw the same way.

Results are available. Struck out again. And you didn't gain any extra weight by giving up a sandwich and a blizzard at the DQ.

I got drawn for a cow tag in 2008. In those days the draw was a little different. I hunted for 5 days in October during the archery season and then went back in December during the gun hunt. I ended up taking one that weighed about 550 lbs. I drew a prime restoration zone unit. I hunted in Knott County. There were elk EVERYWHERE.

I gave up applying because of the way the drawing is done. No preference points for applying year after year. If you and a buddy want to hunt together you couldn't apply together. Even if both of you were drawn, you might both be hunting in different areas of the state. They picked via lottery where you were to hunt - you don't have a choice in the matter.
I know it's only $10, but I've got better places to spend my $$.

Spent a lot of time over the past 15 yrs hunting KY. The elk tag scandal with the Director and Governor's grandson upset a lot of KY hunters..They seemed to draw a tag every year and even hunted Elk out of season at one point.
Kentucky is a great State to hunt, but there's been a lot of ethics violations in past years. Things are much better now.

The KY Department of Fish and Wildlife was just nominated as Conservationist of the Year by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The Kentucky Elk population is estimated at over 12,000.
Missouri, and Virginia have now reintroduced Elk, so Elk hunting opportunities are going to increase in this part of America in the near future.
