I don't have a problem with them bringing in sharpshooters, just with them calling it a "hunt."
However, I think they'd be a lot better off saving that money and opening Griffy up a few weekends to bowhunters and a couple gun hunts per year, similar to the state park deer reduction hunts.

Folks in Bloomington have always had more money that sense.
They could have hunters paying to hunt instead of paying deer cullers. No offense meant, Billy.

Right they are paying more than $300/deer to have them removed. Hunters would have done it for free and just as safely and efficiently

While I personally do not have a problem with "sharpshooters" what the city council fails or doesn't care to realize is that the empty space left by this cull will be easily replenished in a season or two, and then the park will be right back to square one with having to spend another 30k.

Sorry if a bit off topic but...what are the qualifications to become a "sharpshooter"? Is it necessary to be licensed and bonded? Just exactly what is necessary to be considered a "sharpshooter"?

They could have saved a ton of money utilizing bow hunter approach. Hold one or two draw hunts and if they wanted extra assurance of the responsibility of the hunters. They could have added requirements to the draw hunt I.e. must possess the hunter safety card, must use only compound bow or traditional bow, must use tree stands, must be member of archery club or whatever. Yes certain hunters would have been left out. Yet they'd saved ton of money and at least a few outdoorsman would have been utilized to help solve an issue, help the herd and feed a few families etc. I also am interested in how to achieve sharpshooter Qual.

^^^^ THIS
Yep... The Bloomington folks will be shelling out more money every few years.. But they don't care .. It will keep those evil, blood thirsty, knuckle dragging, red neck hunters away from the park killing deer...

...Let em waste their money. Dang strait. Let the tree huggers run the city funds down to nothing over a problem that would otherwise be a revenue generator for the area. Not a smart decision. ..but what did we expect?

I suggested to the councilman behind the whole thing that they open the park to City employees for a bow hunt. I figured between all the civil departments, utilities, fire and police there'd be enough folks to help thin the herd.
He said he would consider my suggestion in the process.
