Back in 1975, on my very first Deer hunt, out in Colorado; I saw all kinds of Mule Deer. They seemed to be everywhere, and there was no antler restriction either. I first noticed a decrease in their population starting back in 1984, and the last Buck I harvested out there was back in 1987. My last year to hunt out there was 1991. Wonder how their Elk herd is doing??
Those points stated in the article, I can agree with especially the loss of habitat due to urban sprawl & mining operations. Lots of Folks have moved to Colorado in recent years especially from Eastern States and California. It's no wonder Colorado has turned into a "Blue" State, with more liberals moving there.

If I am understanding correctly, the Elk herds are doing really good. Wonder if the Elk are squeezing out the Muleys somewhat?

In some areas whitetails are squeezing the milieus out... I have a Friend that lives in Westcliffe, Colorado, and he told me they are seeing more Whitetails since he & his wife moved out there back in 1973.

My understanding is that mule deer numbers are down pretty much across the board.
Fire suppression may have something to do with it in many areas; fewer widespread burns combined with reduced logging = less food and habitat for deer. Some states have been too liberal with doe tags. Whitetails are expanding into traditional mule deer country. Elk populations are growing in many areas. Predator populations have grown and expanded. Droughts, ticks, CWD, and the list goes on.
Not sure what we can do about any of that, except for cutting tags and stepping up lion and wolf hunting.
