Ok I drew for big oaks archery but I never have hunter there before. I do nkt know the woods or layout well at all. I do hunt in the area west and north but not in the reserve. I'm looking for advice as to what area/section I should ask to reserve for my draw. I'd appreciate advise from hunters that know the reserve

Big Oaks NWR is around 50,000 acres. I believe around 25,000 acres is open to hunting. For the most part south of K Road is mostly flat land with a good mix of forest, thickets, and grown up pasture fields. From K Road north, the refuge is mostly forest.
Most of the actual hunting areas in Big Oaks are fairly small, so after the first few days of hunting, a lot of the deer start moving mostly at night, and many of them go into the large restricted areas in the refuge.

I have hunted there for years and I am not sure what area I will pick. It's a bit of a gamble. Last year there was a struggle.

That place is a crapshoot. If the nuts are as abundant down there as they are outside of there its gonna be a difficult year. The deer aren't really gonna have to travel much to feed. Anti wheeze hit it on the head about last year. Only deer I seen actually hunting was the button buck I killed setting next to the truck eating lunch. They have the herd to the point that its actually a hunt to get a chance at a deer down there now. Good luck and if you need any help feel free to get ahold of me.

10 to 15 years ago, you could consistently drive up East Perimeter Road and see 40 to 60 Deer every evening feeding on the grass along the road and the fence. Today the Deer numbers are down a lot from those days. But there are still some giant Bucks on the refuge and some good places to hunt. Big Oaks is a very scenic place with a lot of wildlife, so it's always a fun place to visit.

I also agree with antiwheeze. I've hunted down there for the past couple of years and last year was tough. I have found if you go to the interior parts it seems to be a lot thicker. Not as big an issue with gun but now may be a different story. I'll ne back down for the gun hunt in the 8-9. Also hope my son gets drawn for the youth hunt. Hope this helps. Any thing you find out let me know. Good luck
