I was in my stand last week and two deer had entered the woods from the creek further away from me than they were supposed to. An hour later I was ready to leave and got down from my stand. Before leaving I wanted to check out the trail they had come up, and also pull a couple of vines down. As I was standing there trying to figure out how to setup a double blind to hunt this new trail w/ my kids, and I heard galloping. I looked up to see two deer running directly at me. I didn't move and Mamma peeled off to the right about 15 yds before me, and the yearling ran past me at about 5 feet to the left.
The yearling pulled up and starting walking around, and hung-out 10 yds from me for a couple of minutes before walking <10 ft in front of me on its way to rejoin momma ... who had entered the grassy strip next to the woods I was in, and also started walking. She walked ~10 yds from me, and proceeded to walk to my stand hang out in front of it ... where my bow was hanging, probably less than 40 yds from where I was standing. After a few more minutes they left down the trail they were supposed to come up in the first place.
Amazingly neither deer had any idea I was there. I was in full camo - minus the face mask - and I didn't move except my eyes and maybe turned my head a little. I guess they thought I was a tree in the middle of the trail.
A few days later I set up the double blind w/ my youngest son near the trail. We didn't see anything, but there was a deer down in the creek bed snorting ... and we were downwind of the creek. Unfortunately, it never did come up and visit us.

You obviously don't have your deer trained well enough...

I learned my lesson about 10 years ago. If at all possible, NEVER, EVER, walk around in the woods without your weapon of choice for deer hunting (season permitting). I had a 160-170ish buck at 50 yds just standing there and I had nothing. All I was doing is walking to my stand at the back of the property because I left my ladder stand gun rest in the stand. I was packing for the annual Wi. deer hunt and I forgot I had left it in the stand. Jeans, regular jacket, not trying to be quiet because I was just going 250 yds from the house and back. Well I made it about 120 yds and saw a large doe just standing there, looking at me, maybe 40 yds away. I froze and we looked at each other for what seemed 5 minutes. Then I notice the hind end of another deer about another 10 yds past her. Front of the deer was hidden behind a pin oak. Well, that 2nd deer took one step and my eyes just about popped out of my head. He was looking at her and never saw me. She got ansy, angled off walking and walked right in front of my 200 yd target in the rifle range. He followed her and off they went. I never saw him again. Lesson learned. x-bow season not so much, but firearms and ML seasons? My ML is always over my shoulder even if it's a 5 minute "gotta do this". I'll have it leaning against the barn when I'm splitting wood. You never know...................

Never leave your weapon out of reach. I propped my ML up on a log about 10 feet away while nature called and had a GIANT walk up the trail and stop 20 yards away and watch me! As soon a I made a move for my gun, he bolted. Talk about getting caught with your pants down!!!

I had gotten down from tree stand one season and was messing around front pasture blind when brother in law shot at a couple deer in back of property. He missed. They ran about 10-20 yards from me, my gun lay down, unloaded while we did a stare down for several seconds. I still kick myself, that doe and buck were nice sized.

Unfortunately, it never did come up and visit us. Once, while hunting in Colorado, I had a big Mule Deer Doe almost ran & hit me. She came racing up a hill behind me where I sat, and when I turned around to see what on Earth was going on, she passed me only 2' from me. Made me fall over on my side & man this really startled me!!! My hunting partners said they just might have to come up with a song..... David Got Ran over By A Mule Deer.... Quite an experience!! But we all got a good laugh, out of it, when things calmed down.

I've been bit by leaving my gun at the base of the tree quite a few years ago. Not long after that I learned rule #2, always have more ammo. Or in my case another load for the muzzle loader. Thought I'd make a short stalk up to a bedding area by my house in gun season and took off with my loaded gun and no gear. The plan worked like a charm and I managed to get within 50th of a stud of a 10pt and 2 other small ones. I guessed the big one yo go 150...and I missed. None of the deer seemed to care at all that I was there after the smoke cleared. I literally had to just walk back home while looking over my shoulder at all 3 of the bucks just standing there.
