If you don't want a single shot both Ohio and Michigan passed PCR laws and right now 44 mag lever guns are high. I would wait for the new proposal or look for a reasonable priced .35 Rem in the Marlin. I have seen them in the $350 range and with trimmed cases you will be legal if the proposal does not go through.

Scrub, PM sent regarding .44 mag if you're in the market for one...

If the proposal does pass, I envision lots of PCRs for sale on places like Armslist and the local papers. That would be the time to scoop up a .44 Mag if you still wanted one, when other folks will be trying to get rid of them to aquire funds for a HPR purchase.

I have a savings account I'm setting money aside in each week for this very purpose. I like my .357 (and might even more with the new rounds that got delivered today), but I want both my kids to have a .44 because I feel they are more forgiving shot placement wise.

Just checked Armslist.. There are a bunch of .44 mags up for sale in Indiana. Shotguns too. I think a lot of hunters figure they've hunted their last season with them.

I've never sold a gun.. I get too sentimental about them after I've had them awhile.

You can't go wrong with a Handi-Rifle. I gave away a couple of them at the youth hunt and I wouldn't give a gun if I didn't believe in them. I had a guy in Tennessee who used to get them ready for high power competition and they did rather well against rifles that cost many times over what his customers paid for theirs. Just a little proper tuning and it can be a tack driver.
My only suggestion would be to look at the T/C Encore or Contender. You can piece it together by buying one thing at a time. For $300 you can buy a 44 mag handi...but for $250 you can have a T/C frame that you can buy used barrels for $150-$200 and NOT have to send the rifle off to have the barrel fitted to the frame every time you want to try a new caliber. And the Handi is limited in what you can put on their frames. Not so with the T/C's. You can get over 300 calibers in an Encore and over 200 in a Contender and put that barrel on nay of their frames.
Some say the Handi is cheaper....but it's not so much cheaper and it's also limiting. I suggest saving up a little more and getting a family heirloom...not just a hunting rifle. And if they do approve the high power calibers...you are only a barrel away from having a high power rifle to hunt with. I'm 47 and my kids have already laid claim to my T/C's and said who is getting what when I die.
And try to make sense of the Handi Rifle barrel program. Your frame had to be produced after1987...or was it 1999...or maybe 2000 to get a rifle barrel...depending on the serial number...and after their inspection...or maybe it was a shotgun barrel...or was that a muzzleloader barrel??? I just know that you are better off just buying what you want with a new rifle with them. But with T/C...just start collecting barrels in different lengths and calibers....switch them between frames...and different grips...wherever your imagination takes you. Rifle...pistol....scope...open sights..peep sights....whatever you like.

Sold my Marlin 1894, couldn't get better than a 4-5" group with it. Luckily I got rid of it before (in case) the market gets flooded with PCRs. If they pass the proposal, I've got a .243 in the safe; if they don't then I'm going to purchase another H&R .44 (last one was stolen).

Any word on suspects?

I got my son a Rossi Braztech in 44 mag for $160 and it shoots awesome with my reloads. He loves it, got his first deer with it too. I can get under 2" groups at 100 yards with it. I was really surprised how well it shoots.
