With my work schedule, I knew this year was going to be rough.
Boy was I right.
I had been fortunate enough to encounter deer on each of my few short sits, until today. I managed to get today off thinking the deer movement would be extensive once the snow laid down. It sounds like my instincts were right, just not here. The only deer I saw was cruising at about Mach 1 across a field on the drive to get lunch.
I pulled my cameras and the picture evidence isn't good. The bedding thicket camera doesn't have a picture since Friday night, and the valley trail doesn't have any since opening night of coon season. Have I mentioned my deep feelings about certain coon hunters?
The pics showed some interesting information.
The 150 isn't any more. He broke off his left brow tine, the right looks to be north of 10 inches. I'm hoping he makes it through another year. I think he is a three year old at most.
A buck I named unicorn stood in front of the camera (like 2 feet in front of the camera) and turned his head for 3 different picture angles. He is a main frame 10 with about a 2" kicker on the front of his left base and about a 6" brow tine leaning backwards behind his right brow tine. Looks like he might gross low 140's, but absolutely unique. He didn't look very healthy in August, but looks great now. Pictures were too close to get a good age guess, but if he gives me the opportunity, I won't pass.
4 days off at Thanksgiving and hoping for a little better luck.
Have you guys seen a lot of older deer with sub-par headgear or a lot broken? It seems to be a trend in this area this year. I'm wondering if last winter was so hard on them they spent most of the spring repairing their bodies and not much was left for antlers.
