If insurance companies would quit paying for stupidity, then sooner or later stupid would stop.

When I recall the day of my ol' Baker stand in the days when restraints were all but unknown, I thank God that I'm still alive, intact, and mostly in my right mind!
Nowadays I usually just take along my Hot Seat and find a log or stump to sit on.
If you're climb, use the HSS.

Not sure I'd call someone stupid..maybe uneducated..most all bowhunters I knew in the 70's and 80's used to climb trees and stand on a tree limb with their bow...we shot many deer just standing on a limb 15-20 ft up a tree..we didn't even use a treestand...not too bright probably..but everyone done it...bowhunting and safety has evolved around hunting...live and learn..this day and age no excuse not to wear a harness..granted there are plenty of stupid people out there, but some may not be educated on what to buy and how to use a harness believe it or not.

I know of the guy that fell in Spencer County. He is not stupid by no means. He's a dedicated hunter and outdoorsman who made a poor decision. Praying for a speedy recovery.

Sister in law is a nurse said a lady fell out of her tree stand, broke her ankle with the bone protruding through the skin. She had to crawl home on her stomach to the back door of their home. Dearborn co.

Billy:
Yes, the laws vary from state to state, but some states allow motorbike riders to ride without helmets.

I'm one of the stupid ones that won't use a safety harness. I know i probably should. But after using a baker climber as a kid, you'd have to be doing something silly to fall out of a summit climber. These steel ladder stands are soo much better than the one's i used to build out of 2x4's. I guess a ratchet could snap, but i usually use 2 and sometimes 3 per ladder stand.

USE YOUR HARNESS I only have one stand up now that uses screw in steps. Climbing sticks and ladder stands are much more safer..

Since I was fortunate enough to buy my own ground, I hunt strictly out of ladders, and the bigger the platform and seat the better! Two man stands make for more comfortable sits and most have a shooting rail to help contain you. I wore many a pair of bibs out going up and down trees in an old Loggy climber!

I've had and seen a dozen screw in steps snap. Only time i use them now is for a gear holder or bow holder. Couldn't get me to use them these days. All stands now use climbing ladder sticks with lock on's or ladder stands. And I wear a safety line always.

I went with a Safety line a couple years ago, and have 3 of them on all my sets. If you fall now its only a Bump or scratch, Not Death. Please guys that are not using a Vest or a Safety line, put 5 bucks back every check and start next season Off right, Someone wants you Home. And if you are still hunting this year without one Barrow one or stay on the ground. Heck I have 2 vest you can Barrow. As I will not get out anymore this year? Wait I never went this year at all. That's a whole different story.
