J.L. Hendricks almost didn't make Friday's deer hunt at Eagle Creek Park. The 67-year-old Marine from Cadiz, Ky., has a wound on his leg. It's not new. He got it when two men died and two others lost their legs from a series of mortar blasts. He was 13 days from returning home from Vietnam. Like the memories of the trauma, the wound has never fully healed. t.co/bQ1Lg85A05

I hope some of the meat goes to the locals who need food. It's a city park, the meat should go to the city.
Driving home yesterday from getting a Christmas tree, we saw several deer standing just inside the woods along 56th street. This is not common for 3 pm this time of year. Most were looking back in the woods.
We did not hear a single shot. Of course we were gone most of the day.
This process is sad for people who visit the park, but is needed.

Sad for people that visit the park? I'm glad some of our veterans get to go harvest some deer that are destroying their own habitat. The visitors can sacrifice a few days for this.

Yes sad.
My family see these deer on a daily basis and they have kind of become pets. So knowing they are dying is sad. I am full aware of the situation of the deer at the park, like I said I am there on a daily basis..most days 2 times a day. The hunt was/is needed. I stop a couple times a winter and dispatch a wounded deer that has been hit by a car. The deer are leaving the park to look for food. They are constantly in our neighborhood chewing up all they can. I have pictures of my son just about touching them. Pretty stinking cool.
I was not happy to hear that the hunters are using bait to do so. But I understand why.
So yes sad but necessary.
I hope they open it up to us hunters next year.

I get the reason for the hunt .and congrats to all those lucky Vets.. Now as for the sharp shooter part they can kiss my rump they are not needed at all. Also lets be real that habitat was fine and there was not a single undernourished deer there .Lets not use that tired excuse it gets old .They flat out said there were getting to be too many deer and car deer accidents and that was the reason for the hunt period..
Lets not cover up or embellish the one real reason for the hunt .You don't get deer that nice or bucks that look like that when they are undernourished ..LOL if they are going to reduce that herd that's fine but let hunters do it .FYI it was not a great big state forest ..

You can go in there in the summer and see the browse line. I took this video of a buck eating on August 5th of this year. He was wanting some of the high hanging fruit. ;-) youtu.be/U18icxNd8kA

For Immediate Release: December 02, 2014 Media Contact: Lesley Gordon Director of Communications Department of Parks and Recreation (317) 677-6469; lesley.gordon@indy.gov Willie Matis Communications Coordinator Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc. 317-925-0191 x167; wmatis@gleaners.org Initial Phase of Eagle Creek Deer Management Program Yields 4,800 Pounds for Food Pantries INDIANAPOLIS- The Indianapolis Department of Parks and Recreation today released a summary from the initial phase of the Eagle Creek Deer Management Program that was completed last weekend. The operation by Wounded Warrior Outdoors resulted in the safe reduction of the deer herd and donation of approximately 4,800 pounds of venison to local pantries. Deer have decimated numerous native plant and wildflower species in the park and have caused significant damage to the forest understory. This damage is eliminating food sources for the deer and other species, destroying habitat for birds and compromising the forest's ability to regenerate. By taking action, the Parks Department will be able to reevaluate the area and make long term management plans. "Being able to safely reduce the deer population at Eagle Creek Park was necessary to ensure a sustainable future for Eagle Creek Park and all species that call it home," said John Williams, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. "Partnering with the Wounded Warriors and donating the venison allowed us to work with local partners and make healthy meat available for the community." Wounded Warrior Outdoors utilized 23 participants, including 11 local disabled veterans. All activities in the park were concluded on Sunday, November 30 and the park reopened the following day. The deer management plan removed 142 deer from the park (31 bucks and 111 does). The Wounded Warrior Outdoor participants kept the venison from 27 deer for personal use. The remaining venison, approximately 4,800 pounds, will be donated to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc. "We can't begin to express how grateful we are to receive donations stemming from community partnerships like these," said Cindy Hubert, President /CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. "Food donations that focus on nutrition are exceptional, especially those that focus on high quality protein products like venison. We are truly thankful for all involved in this project for helping in the fight against hunger." This was the beginning phase of the City's Deer Management Program. There is a second reduction planned that will be coordinated with the USDA at a later date. This will focus on the west side of the park, as this initial culling was confined to the east side of the park. The USDA will also provide recommendations for the long term deer management plan for the park. Learn more about the deer reduction program please visit, www.indy.gov/deermanagementprogram.

Looks like the end result was the desired deer reduction, probably healthier deer and habitat in the future, some happy wounded vets, and meat for the needy. Good deal.
