I saw in the obituaries this morning that we have lost a fellow hunter and well known outdoor writer. My condolences to his friends and family .

Woody and John went way back. They began hunting together just after the glaciers retreated.
Seriously though, losing John is a blow to the outdoor community. I have a book of his I won here on this forum. Very good stuff.
Prayers...

I bought and read John's Finding Wounded Deer, just about the time or right before I joined this forum. Woody is mentioned several times in the book. Even though the book is about tracking deer, I learned a lot about how to hunt deer and not have to track them from that book. It is still a staple in my hunting gear. I would highly recommend it to any new hunter.
RIP John Trout Jr.

To 13 bowhunters there at any one time we did a lot of blood trailing. I think John said he documented over 300 such blood trails. I think John used all my bad hits as examples. None of his was listed though.

How long was or at what age did John become a Crossbow Hunter?

How long was or at what age did John become a Crossbow Hunter? John was 68 when he died. I'm guessing he used a crossbow the lasts 5 or 6 years. I know for sure he used it in Illinois ever since he turned 65. One can use it in all archery when they turn 65 over there. John was a deer hunter and could kill deer no matter what hunting tool he had in his hands.

I did not know the man but because of this thread I was at a local gun show yesterday and saw one of his books for 3$ so I got it. Sat last night and read the whole thing. It was very interesting and infornitave. It is written in a streight forward manner and he did not pull any punches. Needless to say I liked it and would recommend this book for ALL beginning hunters and a good read for those with more experence. The book was trailing whitetails. It even had a chapter on black bear which I wish I had seen before my first bear hunt. It would have saved me a ton of grief. It is sad to know he has left this world but he has left us something that can be used for generations to come. Wish I had known him RIP MR TROUT

Check Amazon for John's books. I just bought Hunting Farmland Bucks for $0.04 (decimal point is correct) with free shipping with Amazon Prime (we had a 30-day free trial). I also have Solving Coyote Problems. I really like his style.
