Starting to prepare for the fall of 2015. I trapped water for about 10-15 years in a row during my teens & 20's. Never did much land trapping at all. I gotta hit the 'yotes hard this upcoming year on a few places and I learn better by "hands on" or seeing someone do it vs. just reading about it.
Does anybody know of any trapping seminars, conferences, get togethers, etc. that will be within a 3-4.5 hr drive of South Bend, Indiana in the next 9 months?
I've already done some snaring, and will be checking my "ancient" inventory of traps to see if I have any traps suitable to use, and ordering at least a dozen new traps (I have a pretty good idea that I don't have any large enough, or if I do, it's under a dozen.)
I have some of the basic equipment needed already, but want to make sure I have everything needed and practice before season rolls around so I'm not scrambling last minute. Heck, it takes time to season/dye/wax new traps too!
Unlike trapping before, I have no illusions that there is any money to be made from what is caught - it's more about helping the deer herd out than anything else.

If you can swing the cost, I highly recommend the FTA Trappers college the Fur Takers of America put's on every year. I went 25 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did to help make me a better trapper.

hit the conventions this summer. Good prices on traps and free seminars. www.trapperman.com for more info than you can ever digest the dirthole and flat set/scent post set plus snares in fence crossing and trails....all you need to know. On dirthole, I set 12 inches back and about four inches off center. Nothing smaller than a 175 coil...#3s are much better

trapperdave, both you and ridgerunner recommended the same site. It's bookmarked now, but nothing has been posted yet for 2015. I will explore more there in the future!
I think I can make the dirthole and flat sets from the description, but nothing is said in many descriptions as to where to place the trap. Thanks to you and RR for dimensions. Since we are trying to place something exactly where the animal will step, being 4" or 6" off means the difference between a catch and not having a catch and possible educating the 'yote.
ms660, the cost is doable, it's the time of the year that's the problem Spring and Fall are my busiest times of the year and getting away for a week just isn't possible. A day or two can be arranged, but I don't slow down until after the water temps drop into the lower 50's, and time is usually available once things freeze up.

I havent been on trapperman for a few years. It was THE place for trappers at the time. Lots of activity. If the still have it, go to the "sets" forum. iirc it was a read only forum there that illustrated different sets

Go to www. trapperman.com click on " Trap Talk" , then at the top of page click on "Archives" , and search through the Archives..I can assure you there is more info concerning trapping coyote than you could read in a years time. Unreal all the info you can find there....also if you have a question about coyote trapping, post it on there...many excellent trappers on that site always willing to offer good advice.
