This could have waited a week, since the season closes next Sat. I didn't want to put it in this years contest thread. I had a couple thoughts, and wondered what you boys think. First, saving squirrel tails. It kind of goes along with Hillbillyjeff's mepps thread below. I wondered what you thought about all of the contestants saving their squirrel tails, and at the end of the season getting them all together and selling them to mepps and donating the cash to Woody, for prizes in the squirrel contest? It wouldn't be much, for instance the 400 squirrels this season would be about $80. I just thought it might be a nice gesture for Woody sponsoring the contest. Your thoughts..... Second, what do you boys think about a 2-3 day campout for like minded squirrel chasers, next fall, say in Sept., after Labor Day, and before archery deer season gets going? It needs to be something kinda centrally located, so nobody has too far to come. This spring I'm going down to Owen Co., and check out the Owen-Putnam state forest, Lieber SRA, and associated camprounds. That's a little over a 2 hr. run for me. I want to check the terrain so that it's not too rough for me[and maybe some other geezers on this site ]. If we have enough fun, maybe it would become an annual thing. One thing about it, we got 6 1/2 mos. til limb chicken season rolls around. So let's kick this around. maddog

I'm down for that (both suggestions).
I actually have some tails in the freezer right now from a year ago that I have not dug out to get rid of. My cousin used to ship them to Mepp's, but quit last year because he said it was getting to be a hassle as they would dock him for uneven hair lengths on a tail and thinly haired tails and such and he was just taking baits instead of cash payment. I had been using them for cat toys for "our" outside cat that shows up every day to visit. But something is better than nothing and I think that it would be a dandy way to get Woody a little more cash for the site.

I figured that Owen Co. might be the most centrally located. Between the state forest and the state recreation area, it would give us all the woods we need to hunt on, for 2-3 days. Don't really know if we can get that much interest on the campout/squirrel hunt or not. I know there are some ponds, as well as the reservoir to fish midday. Figured fried squirrels and fried fish would make most of us happy for dinner, as well as a cold adult beverage....just sayin'. Maybe when I go down to scout things out, maybe a couple of you guys that live closer, and we could meet up for the scouting trip. I think it would be a blast, and not too costly for everyone involved. maddog

Depends on how many are interested you could use or farm we deer hunt on. We would be more than happy to let you kill all the squirrels you want. Has a big lake that's full of bluegills, bass, and cats. It's 600 acres so depending on how many want to go how crowded it would be.

Agreed, very nice offer. Like woody, where is the farm located, and out of 600 acres, how much is woods? A couple more questions I came up with. How many campers could it handle? Is there a place to set up a campsite? don't take this next question wrong, but do you own or lease the property? Last thing anybody would want is 15-20 guys showing up to set up camp and hunt, and have the owner freak out, and tell everybody to leave.

South of brownstown and north of Salem. Yeah I didn't think of the whole camper scenario. There is zero spots to put up a camper. It is 10 minutes from Delaney park campground though. I don't lease or own. I have been hunting the property for a long time. I've worked a deal out with the landowner that assures it won't be a problem. The only issue you might have is he's a little of a hermit and don't get many visitors. He might talk your ear off and want to cook for you. Please, for the love of god, don't eat his cooking. Let me know what interest you come up with as far as people to hunt the property and if the camping situation is okay and ill work out the rest of the details.

span870, It's a heck of a nice offer, but a couple of things. First, it's down in the southeast corner of the state. we have a lot of hunters that are up in the north end, and may not want to drive that far. second, we may not even know how many will be coming until a week before the hunt. Could be just 3-4, or it could be 20+. I personally think we'll be better off more centrally located on state/national forest ground in the middle of the state. Which begs the question, I brought up Owen Putnam state forest, what about Morgan Monroe SF, for you boys that live close to there? Being able to camp, whether it's a tent, pop up, or full blown camper, where there are fire pits, tables, toilets, and be able to walk out of camp to go hunting, will enhance the experience, I think.

I haven't been in the contest but do get some squirrel hunting done whenever I can (where does the time go!?!!??!)...
I also like the idea on the squirrel tail collection/donation! I've never had enough tails to worry about trying to keep them but I'd bet a collective group would make it worth more just from the quantity.
I would also like to offer my little piece of heaven for a weekend gathering. I'm located about 5 miles west of West Lafayette and have about 40 acres of woods in my immediate control with another bunch "in the family" that I'm sure I could get for a weekend squirrel hunt. I've had my old Boy Scout Venturing Crew camped out there many times-I think there should be enough room for several campers and/or tents in the old 8 acre hay pasture-depending on where the campers are set up there's even room for a range if that is wanted.
I know I'm not "exactly" centrally located but am offering anyway....beside that it's always nice to put faces to names!!!

Offer still stands. There are several pieces of Washington Jackson sf real close but I do understand wanting to walk out of tent and hunt. Let me you if you change your mind. I'd say if you want something central, morgan-monroe is going to be your best bet.

How many of you guys who responded above, have some kind of camping equipment? I have a tent, cot, EZ up canopy, coleman stove and lantern. Was going to do a campout this last fall around home, with my son and son-in-law, but it never worked out because of all the rain we got. Any of you, who might go, have full blown campers? Could make a difference in which campground we look at this spring.

I've still got several tents, dutch ovens, screened shelters and a "car shed" shelter that have all been used by my Scouts in the past....sounds like between the three of us we could house a few people for a weekend.

I have a hybrid. The ones that fold out on each end. Someone's more than welcome to use it. Sleeps at least 4 comfortably. Shower, fridge, toilet, heat, ac. It just sits unless family comes for holidays.
