AKRON, Ohio – Mike Tonkovich was a marked man at the first statewide Ohio Deer Summit on Saturday morning at the Ohio Division of Wildlife district office. "If I'm hated equally by both hunters and farmers, then I must be doing my job," said Tonkovich, in charge of managing Ohio's white-tailed deer. The Buckeye State deer herd is shrinking by design, and Tonkovich's job was to explain to a full house of 90 sportsmen why that is a good thing.... t.co/gAhO2mGNwL

Yes sounds familiar. However in the real world if you are not making your main costumers happy and also the non paying ones happy you would be shown the door and fired .That is a fact of life. Sounds like Mike may be in denial a bit here and might be looking for a new job in a few years .I mean after all its a political position and farmers would not be happy until every animal that eats crops birds ,small game and yes deer is gone and that just is not going to happen .Sorry reality check here it is totally in the end game about keeping the management tool happy and that is hunters .
It is absolutely comical that he ever tried to sell the idea that OH's deer herd was ever above or over carrying capacity since the herd was no where near that .LOL yep he must think hunters are the dumbest people walking .The fact is the herd was still slightly growing and at no time did the big buck harvest slow until he put the herd reduction plan into effect over there .WOW just wow the deer must of been just starving to death and never producing a single fawn !!!LMAO his reaching .
FYI The DNR is paid for by hunters/fishermen for the most part and license and equipment sales the PRA .The fact is without them the load of finance responsibility would then be paid for by the other citizens of the state who do not hunt or fish. Just the real fact of life and the State Gov. will not like having to pick up that bill and then sell it to the public.

Hunters have a difficult time understanding that the DNR works for all citizens of the state.. Yeah but how much revenue is generated for the DNR every year by NON-hunters?......How about Hunters?

Hunters have a difficult time understanding that the DNR works for all citizens of the state.. Yeah but how much revenue is generated for the DNR every year by NON-hunters?......How about Hunters? The vast majority of hunters will continue to hunt, and contribute cash to the dnr, even with reduced game sightings. Lack of land to hunt on will do more to reduce the number of hunters.

I would guess at least half comes from sources other than hunting licenses. State park admission, boat launch fees, ORV registration, camping, fishing licenses, etc.

Many of the same people I'd venture to say.

The deer harvest was down in many states this year.
When it comes to the subject of carrying capacity. What most people don't understand is that humans today can alter the carrying capacity of their land by planting food plots, leaving up crops, and by using feeders.
On properties where hunters have feeders, food plots etc, the land can support more deer. So today millions of farms/ properties in America can probably support more deer now than ever before. The DNR simply does not know how many or which farms/ properties are using food plots, feeders etc. So even the DNR can not accurately say what the carrying capacity for an entire county is. Because the carrying capacity may be different on every single farm/property.
