This was discussed in another thread might was somewhat buried and some folks might not have had an interest in that subject. I thought it would be good to bring it back as a separate thread.
Some folks think that the DNR is not addressing what they perceive as a dwindling herd. Since 2012 the DNR has been cutting back on the numbers of bonus antlerless permits in areas that they believe it is needed. It is part of the targeted approach to deer management
A comparison between the number of county permits issued between the 2012 season and the 2013 season.
There are 14 counties that had a reduction from an 8 to a 4.
They are:
Lake
LaPorte
Elkhart
LaGrange
Steuben
Noble
Kosciusko
White
Madison
Putnam
Morgan
Scott
Allen
Huntington
There are 5 counties that had a reduction from a 4 to a 3
Whitley
Posey
Warrick
Perry
Greene
There was 1 county that had a reduction from a 4 to a 2
Benton
Addition -
There was 1 county that went from a 4 to an 8
Ripley
There was 1 county that went from a 3 to a 4
Henry
Sure looks like a lot of reducing (20 counties) versus just a couple (2 counties)increases...
Now the Antlerless permits from 2013 to the 2014 season…
10 counties reduced from an 8 to a 4 –
Porter
St Joseph
Marshall
Fulton
Dekalb
Warren
Tippecanoe
Vermillion
Gibson
Dearborn
1 county reduced from an 8 to a 3
Howard
4 counties reduced from a 4 to a 3
Newton
Cass
Miami
Huntington
1 county reduced from a 2 to a 1
Benton (was a 4 in 2012)
16 counties reduced in number of bonus antlerless permits. This is in addition to the reducing of 20 counties the year before.
3 counties increased from a 4 to and 8
Monroe
Bartholomew
Lawrence
Six more counties dropped out of the “special late season antlerless hunt” from 2013. The total counties out of the “special late season antlerless hunt” now stands at 29.
STILL the naysayers are saying that DNR is doing nothing on the herd..
