I'll be starting EMT-B training next month. Anyone have experience with this? What got you interested and/or started in the field?

I've been an EMT for 23 years i got into because i wanted to be a full time firefighter back then. I thought if i took it would help me get a job. Ended up working at Chrysler in Kokomo for 14 years. I joined the volunteer fire dept in 1994 and still do it today, but just dont have the time i used to (woody can attest to this lol) The EMT class today is alot harder than when i took it. You really have to dedicate yourself to the class.
Good Luck to ya

Congratulations on getting into what may be one of the most difficult undertakings that most people wouldn't want to even think about! I was an EMT for 12 years (while being on our local VFD for 27 years)-there are times that still come back to haunt me but I've also got one confirmed CPR "save" that made it all worth it! Hopefully you will always be able to keep a level head and make the right the decision....the first rule is "Everybody goes home!"
My daughter just finished off her Paramedic course last fall after being an EMT for several years. If you are hoping to find a job as an EMT you might be looking for awhile. The Paramedic class was certainly as grueling as anything she had ever taken on but she is now employed full time with an ambulance service and seems to really like helping people at what can be their worst of times.

If any EMTs are looking for positions, I know a guy pretty hi up the chain at Care Ambulance in Indy. From what he tells me, their business is booming and they are almost always looking for EMTs.

No experience, just wanted to say good luck. These people see some messed up stuff! The only advice I can give is if you are the driver, try not to hit the potholes on the road while transporting a conscious patient to the hospital. After a tumble from a cliff years ago I swear the ambulance driver was purposely seeking out every pothole he could find to punish me for my stupidity, lol. The 45 minute ride there was the worst part of my hospital visit!

Agreed anyone right now that is young and wants to get into the fire service needs to take Paramedic Class. Being a medic darn near guarantees you a job with a full time fire dept !!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I expect to be challenged greater than I ever have. If I am only ever able to help one person, it'll be worth it.
