So I didn't see any threads explicitly about dealing with trespassers so I thought I'd start one.
We've had someone break into our barn once, but haven't had much problem otherwise. However, with turkey and mushroom season coming up, I was trying to think of a plan. We're not around our property as much as we should be so likely I'm not going to catch anyone red handed.
If I do, I'm torn between balancing making it clear it's not worth their trouble to be on my land against making them mad enough that they'll deliberately mess with my place.
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts and experiences.
Thanks.

I have dwelt with this very problem I called the Police when they came the trespasser had left a pill bottle of Pot in his car and the keys in it next to prison ground well he was in more trouble than mushroom thievery and trespassing pluss he didn't show up for his day in court the police made it clear that with a bag of Mushroons he was also stealing dont even talk to them call the police

I've been dealing with this ever since I bought my place. In fact I caught a mushroom hunter Monday. My place is a magnet for mushroom hunters and 4 wheelers. I have had fences broken, no trespassing signs shot, stands stolen, ground rutted up, beer cans thrown all over, I've caught people deer hunting, fishing, hiking, you name it, I've dealt with it. I will say that each year my issues get less frequent. I tried being nice about it...that doesn't work. I tried being a jerk about it...that didn't work either. I call the sheriff now and make examples of people. Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=852914431431752

Tried the nice route and the azz route neither worked. Press charges. I had 12 arrested one year during mushrooms season. Always have your phone take pictures if possible get video and audio is possible.

It's amazing how fast the word get around when you start having people arrested.
I actually made it all of last year with not having anybody threaten to kill me. Progress. Slow, but progress. :-)

We had to run some off 2 years ago who were trespassing. We were very lucky that day as it could've resulted in a bad situation.
We had hunted that morning but didn't have any luck. We drove around grandpa's fields and spotted a group of birds with 2 nice toms in our field, roughly 100 yards from our woods. We snuck halfway in and set up our decoys in a clear cut in the woods while keeping an eye on the group of birds. Suddenly a hen roughly 50 yards in front of us cuts loose. After listening briefly we could tell it wasn't a decoy. So, I stood up only to see the birds head the other direction and 2 guys with their chests puffed up storming our direction. They proceeded to get an attitude and tell us we just blew their chance at the birds...I proceeded to puff my chest up and tell them they were on OUR PRIVATE PROPERTY. After one tried to say he had permission, I explained the field he was allowed to hunt was across 2 fence lines back to the west...had a bird cut between us someone could've been seriously injured. The best part was, they asked if we still wanted them to leave!

I have zero tolerance with trespassing...call police, report it, post land and prosecute...that's the only way to stop it!

I have found a more tactful way of dealing with trespassers. If I catch them in the act which I've only caught 2 people trying to fish and told them politely that we were trying to get a "grasp" on what was going on the property and that if he/she would give me his/her contact info I would think about letting them come back in the future. That way I have some "info" about who is potentially coming around. Lastly, I found out that if you just make the place look a little more visited, mowing grass, moving chairs around etc. that seems go a longer way that what I originally thought it would. Going on 2.5 years now without any vandals out and about, I've tried the whole get the police involved when a punk teenager tried to steal a 12 pack of beer I had sitting on my deck while I was on the adjoining hill, got the law after him and then about 6 months later the door to my cabin was kicked in and some fishing stuff stolen.

If you are my fiance you just act 10 times crazier and annoying then the people who try to trespass. Probably not the solution for everyone but he has dealt with some very nasty people in his life so very little scares him. Law enforcement and DNR (actually better than police but also very busy)in this particular area is slow and oftentimes will not respond to calls for various reasons so we have been forced to resolve the problem ourselves. Sometimes the dispatch will just flat out say that we are on our own and not even refer us to an officer. Maybe it's just the dispatchers that suck because if you can actually get an officer, they're OK, but good luck actually trying to talk to one. Out of the 20 times they have been called out... only one ever bothered to show up and do anything. We don't even bother to call anymore if we see an issue, we just try to handle it ourselves unless we have a feel that the person could be dangerous.
Nothing scares the crap out of people then hearing random gunfire really close. We routinely go down there to shoot clays. We try to use the loudest firearm possible and show up randomly and park our vehicle where it is not easy to see.
My personal favorite last year was watching him catch a mushroom hunter in the act. The person didn't know we were there, but he spotted them. So he snuck up into the field and tossed some clays in the air and shot them about 80 yrds away in the opposite direction from where this person was. Scared them so badly that their bag tore on some briars as they took off running to the property line and spilled mushrooms everywhere. They tried to play it cool by pretending to pick mushrooms on the other side of the property line. I'm assuming they were waiting for him to leave so they could sneak back over and pick up their loot.
My fiance slowly strolled up there with the shotgun on his back and slowly picked up the spilled mushrooms one by one and made a show of putting them into his bag. Never said a word to the guy and we continued to mushroom hunt on our side the entire day while he skulked off into the distance. Haven't seen him again.

No, it's definitely not ideal. I actually hate that we have to resort to this kind of thing but it works.
But when law enforcement never shows up to help you deal with the problem, what other options do you have? Obviously they are busy and never are going to come.
I once had to resolve a slam dunk STOLEN vehicle case 100% in my name only by myself because the dispatch made the "judgement call" that she didn't feel the situation warranted their attention and would not report the vehicle as stolen. Several friends and witnesses on this one... all disgusted and appalled at the lack of response, assistance, and advice on what to do. If anyone wants more of the story, more then happy to share in a PM. Really... just a spit in the eye that they wouldn't even file a report.
I was told by the dispatch that I was going to have to "handle it myself"... so I did. I found it myself and took it back. Ironically that was when the police decided it was something that they needed to check out.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't have experience with District 8 or 9, but District 6 is pretty decent. I also lived in District 4 for awhile. I don't have many good things to say about the police force but the DNR there was also pretty good.

You have to catch them in the act with an enforcement eye witness, sucks but that is pretty much what it takes. Had one particularly bad opening morning of turkey season there, it almost got very ugly. And yes, I caught people eventually with the local CO help.

Dealing with the Owen county police department is a joke. Have had great luck with the C.O. Last dealing I had I went straight to the C.O. and the State Police.

Our prosecutor wouldn't do anything unless an LEO told them they couldn't be on the property and and LEO caught them a second time.
We now have a new prosecutor.

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts and experiences. Thanks. I live in a very remote area, so I don't really have problems with Trespassers. HOWEVER, around four years ago during our late M/L Deer season; I ran into a trespasser which was hunting on my property [with a H.P. rifle, a .30-06]!! I approached him and put the fear of God into him by yelling at him that no one is to trespass on my private property. This "Joker" was not wearing a Hunter Orange vest or using a legal weapon. Heard him shoot, which sounded unlike a M/L so I investigated, and ran into him; he told me he wounded a Doe. This is when I lost my Temper and threaten to call the Sheriff & C.O. He refused to look for the Doe, which I know he shot on my land, so I looked around and found nothing so I assumed he missed or make a poor shot. Got back to the house and told my Brother who called the Sheriff and the "Turn-in-a-poacher" number to report it. After this we've not had one Trespasser since. You should place "NO HUNTING OR TRESPASSING" signs around your property.
