Wife & I are contemplating a move. This will likely be the last one that we make, so we're wanting to make an "informed" decision.
We are looking closely at eastern Tennessee- specifically the area around Johnson City.
Anyone here have any input, pro or con, about life in this part of the country?

Had a friend that transferred up here from E Tenn about the time I hired on. They, especially his wife, COULD NOT WAIT to get back home to that area.

Don't know about that particular area of Johnson City but what time I've spent in eastern Temnessee I really enjoyed the beauty of the country side.. Nice area...
If most of my family did not live here SW Indiana . Yes I could live there..

I appreciate the responses, fellas. We were initially considering the Myrtle Beach area, but the wife has a sister who lives just out of Gatlinburg, and she wants to be a little closer to her.
HCG, I could stand to look like the gent in your avatar- might even be an improvement, but the wife likes to dress me up- especially when I'm a preachin', marryin' or buryin'.

My family is from the Tri-Cities area (Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City) it's my favorite place on earth. My dad was raised on a small farm in Goshen Valley (in the Bay's Mountain range) about 15 miles from Kingsport. I grew up spending every possible second I could down there. You will get nothing but a glowing endorsement of that area from me!

The area is steeped in history as well. By the way, a good portion of my book is set in the Ft. Watauga/Sycamore Shoals area, which is just outside Johnson City in Elizabethton.
That's where Daniel Boone set out from to blaze the trail into Kentucky. It's also where the Overmountain Men left from to march to the Battle of Kings Mountain
That whole area is part of the "Lost State of Franklin" which was a failed attempt at an independent state pre-dating Tennessee (also in my book)

I grew up just across the state line in NC. Johnson city was the closest major town. Ive been in love with those mountains my whole life. I truly wish I could move back. There isn't anywhere on earth imo so rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. The people there are genuinely good, neighborly, and nice people...much more so than I've found in Indiana (no offense to anyone here:-/ ) I moved away to attend college in 04 and ended up here for bigger deer and work (in that order). If I could figure out how to make my family farm in those mountains produce 160 inch deer I'd move back and never leave. That area is an outdoorsmans dream though....plenty of deer..just not very many big ones, plus tons of Turkey, bear, wild boar, elk (if you know where to look;) ), world class trout fishing, ginseng, ramps (people are as fanatical about those as they are morels here), awesome arrowhead/artifact hunting...I could go on and on. The far western NC & east TN mountains were my back yard growing up....so I may be a bit biased..but I can't think of many places I'd rather be. I sincerely appreciate the responses, folks. Our present plan is to get our house market ready, and transition next spring. I have been researching the area for a little while, and it seems that the only "negatives" are from folks who find the area too conservative. I think that I can live with that.
Also, a few reviews mention the lack of job opportunities in the region, but that's not a major factor at this juncture.
Thanks again

Thanks again As far as being too conservative, sure, the majority of folks in that area lean right, but there are also pockets of very "artsy" populations throughout the area. In fact, Johnson City has a fairly big homosexual scene. Not that THAT would interest you. (Oh, and that is NOT in my book)
