I think the "Actual RUT" aka: breeding phase happens pretty much the same time each year. Weather, moon phase, harvesting crop's etc. may influence daytime activity.

What we see and what is happening are not always the same. I do think there are a few factors (such as moon phases) that can move the "peak" a handful of days one way or the other. If I were to pick the 12th as the center then those variables might move it anywhere from the 6th to the 18th. But I think the "rut" happens from the middle of October until late December in our neck of the woods. Basically from the time the first doe comes in until the last doe is bred.

I agree with Boonechaser and Swilk.
If I am pinned down to take a blind shot at 7 days to hunt in SE Indiana every year, I would pick Nov. 4th through Nov. 10th.
I'd feel confident that those days, based on 15 years of observations, would give me the best chance at seeing the most bucks on their feet throughout the daylight hours.
It kills me to be at work on any of those days, but I only get 2 or 3 of them off each year. Sitting at work on those days I just know I am missing a good show.

My wife must feel like a widow from about November 1 till about the 20th.

Luckily where I teach we get 15 PDO's a year to use. Plus I have 140 days saved up to use.

I thought is was a good article to read, especially for a guy like me. Like swilk indicated, most of us go every day we can.
Our experience gives us a comfort zone. When I shot my first buck, three evenings in a row, just before sunset, he came through my area. I'd been there for 3 weeks and hadn't seen a thing. First sighting was Oct 25, and I killed him on the 27th.
Last year, in the last week of Oct, I saw deer everyday, but then the fields were harvested and then nothing. So my brief comfort time is before harvest. After this is an unknown experience.
Regardless, this post got me all excited again.

Oh, I COULD take off, but I am being groomed for an admin position, so I am trying to win friends and influence people. Plus, I get two weeks off in the middle of October and the last two years I've sealed the deal then.

You couldn't pay me enough to be an admin. I would be to honest with parents and tell them how it is. I cant sugar coat things. My principal is a hunter and can never hunt during the week. Sure he makes 6 digits but not worth it to me. He doesn't make that much more than teachers once you reach top of pay scale.

But I understand what you are saying.
