We were sitting around talking when he said something akin to "Well, at least this year I can dust off my old .30-06 and rifle some deer to death."
A silence fell as I scratched nervously at my head, searching in vain for the right words. "Uh, actually, um, the proposal kinda died," I replied weakly.
The resulting tirade was almost worth the proposal's failure. Having spent many years in North Carolina, where in most places at least, the vaunted beanfield rifle is a beloved deer hunting tradition, he simply did not take it well.
I conceded that most of the arguments against didn't hold up; I agreed that it made no sense that you can shoot a squirrel with just about anything but not a deer; I mentioned that I was surprised it had failed... there was no consoling him.
Why, OH WHY, when I perceived that he had not heard did I not have the brains to set up a camera and get my best Youtube video EVER?
DANG.
Oh well.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that there will be several hunters nabbed for using a HPR this coming season and blame it on the fact that they thought they'd been legalized. You know it's going to happen!

So, set up your hidden camera and tell him you were mistaken and misread the proposal results...And that it is legal for him to use his .30-06 after all on deer! I'd love to see that reaction just as much!

I bet it was a sight to be seen.
I feel his pain. When the bill died, I felt like something died in me. I was bummed. I have to admit that I had no plans to shoot it from a level position.

So was it a "Hitler finds out the HPR was withdrawn" worthy performance?

So was it a "Hitler finds out the HPR was withdrawn" worthy performance? Nearly. Come to think of it, I can't believe someone hasn't done that. Or have they?

The illegal use of HPRs in Indiana, has been going on for years. Nothing new.

The illegal use of HPRs in Indiana, has been going on for years. Nothing new. ...especially land owners. I can see how they would do it, and feel like they're not doing anything wrong. My Engineer's brother is a farmer, and will shoot them and let them lay. He sees them as a pest.

So am I reading this right that the bill died and that it is STILL NOT LEGAL to use HPR's to hunt deer? Been out of touch with the forum lately. Thanks and god bless

Still not legal to use all rifles 243 and larger....still the same options that have been available the last few years though.

I haven't heard of the ruling yet. Thanks for the clarification, when did they make the decision? Has it been some time or did it just come out?

You can post it just after you return from the emergency room.
