I plan to be in the woods two weeks from today with a pellet gun. I have always found hickory trees to be the best in the early part of the season. I think the squirrels have to work a bit more on hickory nuts than beech and that makes them more vulnerable.

Where do y'all typically hunt? I agree with the hickory trees. I find a place about 20 yards from a big tree and sit.

I'll hit them hard for the first 6 weeks and then stop. I hope to get some in the handicap of Atterbury, but any woods will have them running over themselves. I wish they have a reduction hunt in Garfield Park. They would come right up to me and tug my pant leg when I would go there for photos.
I didn't see any this weekend when I went to my woods, but they're just being shy.

I mowed the yard yesterday and noticed a few hickory nuts on the ground, but no cuttings yet. I also noticed that the birds are going after beech nuts. Hopefully it will be a good season.

I usually have more luck at oak and hickory first then later walnuts.

Here in Central Kentucky we have: Mockernut, Pignut, bitternut, and a few sand hickory. But there are no Shagbark hickory trees in my area. We have plenty of mast this year, besides the Hickories, like Black Gum berries, various species of Oak which have acorns this year. I've noticed that our Squirrels here generally start cutting on Popular, Maple seeds, and pine cones first, as Hickory aren't ripe enough for them until late August or early September. We also have a variety of Beech that is smaller then the ones I am use to up in Southern Indiana. I haven seen much "Squirrel activity" on this variety of Beech. Going to be an interesting Squirrel Season though.

I have spotted one or two crossing the long driveway to my brother-in-law's place where I go most days to shoot the bow. There are a good variety of nut trees in the area and when they get going on them, there are usually hickory nuts or acorns bouncing off the tin roof of the cabin, reminding me that season is nearing.
But the only ones I've seen this past week or so have been leaving the cornfield that runs alongside the drive.
Got curious this evening when I finished practicing, and took a little walk through that corn. Lots of critter damage in there, and I'm sure that one squirrel I saw leaving the field was carrying an ear as he ran.
Looked like the deer and probably crows had also been feeding heavily there, and I suspect the 'coons are getting their share as well, as I saw three young ones leaving his pond a couple evenings ago.

I am hoping to get the opportunity to get out and bust some squirells out of the tree tops this weekend but hoping it's not to hot

Yep, they've ruined the fuel lines on 2 of our vehicles this year ($1,000 in damage!). Since the family dog has passed they wander right up to the parent's house and treat it like a jungle-gym. I will wage war in 2 days!

Hadn't really been out looking, but yesterday, I decided to go take a quick peek where I'm going to hunt opening morning. I didn't go til 10:30 am, was just going to check the pignut hickories for cuttings. Walked in maybe 75 yds., and saw 2-3 up two hickories side by side. It was raining cuttings. I backed out and headed for home. I know where I'll be sitting Sat. am. maddog

They're all over the yard right now. Seem to be hitting the hickories, haven't really noticed them on the oaks.

if you have corn fields bordering your woods, hunt the edge. They love corn on the cob
