I would put them out waaaaayyyyy in advance.. I try to stay out of any area that I think a deer is going to be at or traverse through.
I re range trees and bushes every time I go to the stand to re-remind myself of distances..

I remember sitting in the tree stand deer hunting one day it was snowing bad enough the laser rangefinder I was using refused to work (due to the continuous snowfall). So there are conditions where laser rangefinders just don't work and using known-distance markers would be useful.

Ranger finders are just another one of those gadgets we all insist on carrying these days. Got by fine without one for decades.
