Jon, Partners hunt and you have to have a partner. Can't go it alone there. Also there is a twenty min safety briefing you have to go through every year. Thanks! On this hunt the partner can shoot too? At Crane, I just have a helper who can't shoot. Yes, I think I saw the safety course was offered the day before the hunt. It looks like I have to call to make a reservation to let them know that I'm coming. Do you have any idea how much the extra military license costs? I may not need it as my hunt is the first weekend of firearm. I doubt very seriously that I would see a buck on Oct 17. Actually, I'll be shocked to see a single deer on Oct 17 weekend. It looks like I get a $10 break for being permanently handicap. I knew this would pay off someday!

Yes. Your partner can also shoot. No idea on the price of the tag. Have my lifetime.

The regs are available to print off if you click on your results.. it says you can either use a state license, or buy a military refuge license if you want your deer to be in addition to your state bag limits. I have a Hawken you can borrow for the primitive hunt if you need one. We'll have to meet up on the 14/15 hunt date.. Thanks LCH! That's very kind of you. I may need it. I have to say, I'm a little nervous about this primitive hunt. I'm not sure why I signed up for that one. I'll look at that page, but if it's written like the hunting rules, I bet I have a hard time interpreting the information. Sometimes I just want a yes or no answer. Do you live out that way, or did you get a draw too? Do partners get to hunt too? At Crane they don't. I went out that way with Saltydog once, but I didn't see Big Oaks. It's nice out there. I live in Bedford.. The military refuge license is $24. I was drawn for firearms at Big Oaks the 14/15, unsuccessful on the primitive muzzleloader..

Don't forget you can't use your firearm tag prior to 11/14 at big oaks.

My work buddy says he has an old style muzzleloader that I can use. Thanks though; I appreciate it. You are more than welcome to go with me on the muzzleloader hunt if you'd like. I don't have a partner for it yet. Remember, I can't walk a long distance, but I'll go until I drop.

You can use bonus antlerless any time. For a buck you have to use a military tag or your regular firearms tag.

I'm a pretty good dragger (deer, hopefully not hunt partners )

It is Oct 17 &18. I can bring my trailer to tow them home; I figure they'll be piled up over the top, but I have straps and rope to keep those big antlers from dragging the road. Maybe I'll stop just before I drop. LOL I have a jet sled to drag deer; it makes it easier.

I'm a pretty good dragger (deer, hopefully not hunt partners ) He is more like a good nuckle dragger. Jon, bring plenty of bananas for him and he will drag out whatever you drop :-)

Big Oaks is going to make a lot of money if each hunter now has to pay $20. There are thousands of people who hunt there each season.
You have to watch the safety briefing video before you can hunt. This is because Big Oaks used to be a military base so the video goes over certain things a hunter may encounter at Big Oaks.
The deer population is way down at Big Oaks from what it used to be but there is still some good hunting there if you find the right area and have patience.

And a Lawrence County mouth breather too. No worries about flies. He will catch them all :-)

Pinhook actually, doubt if very many have heard of it Most folks I know from Springville are some kind of Lawrence/Greene County hybrid

This condition must filter across the county line for some distance. It's hard to contain the Greene County syndrome.

I'm sooooooorrrry. Hey, I was looking at Big Oaks from satellite and found what I thought was a good spot, this isn't saying much, but it was "day use only". Well, I just wanted to hunt it in the day. I'm not coon hunting. However, they have numbered areas specifically for hunting, so I'm assuming that "day use only" is not for hunting, yes? I haven't found an area marked hunting that I like. I would think they'd let a handicap guy use a fire tower as an elevated blind, yes? I'm guessing that asking where a good spot to pick wouldn't do any good either. LOL Chub would back slap me.

Not an easy hunt at all. Hopefully you go with someone who has been there. 55K acres, 18mi top to bottom, takes an hour to get to the northern areas from where you enter. They are very hilly, you will be better off in the southern half. Dont go with expectations, that way if you see or get one, it will be a positive. I have seen three in three trips. All three were in 2006, one was a likely booner. No deer since between two trips and four guys. Super neat place though. Definately worth going at least once, especicially during the rut, you never know. When you see the pictures of bucks on the wall when you take your safety meeting, you will drool. Most were from years ago tho. Good luck.
