So my collection of guns has finally outgrown my wood gun cabinet and I'm looking to buy a safe. What would be a good quality safe without breaking the bank? What features should i look for? I know fire rating is one thing to consider but realistically I'm more concerned with theft than that (me and my wife vacation a lot).

How much do you want to spend?

Side wall construction is a weakness for many safes, unfortunately to really get a substantial one you are going to have to spend some money. If you really want a good safe those who are in the business say you want 1/4" sidewalls and 1/2" door. A safe like that gets pretty pricey. What is your budget? I have a Heritage and I'm satisfied with it -nope it doesn't have 1/4" sidewalls so I don't consider it a top line safe. It really come down to how hard do you want to make it on them. I figure what I have is enough to give the casual thief a problem; a pro will get in it. A security system will help discourage a break in as well.

Was looking to spend 1000-1500$. I know realistically that someone can break into about any safe if they have enough time. I'm looking for something the casual theif couldn't just pry open with a crobar in a couple minutes though.

Not sure what part of the state you're from or if it matters, but Johnson Safes are made in Zionsville, IN. He uses American steel, American parts and will custom make to any size you'd like. Our family keeps our collection in one and have no complaints! Here's his site: johnsonsafes.net/Home_Page.html

I've thought of adding a false wall to create storage for firearms, etc. If we didn't have our home on the market, I'd likely pursue the idea.

Once in a while Costco has a sale, and they sell Cannon safes. A friend bought one from them, and they even delivered it. He's got a tractor with a set of forks, so getting it off the truck was no problem.
The locksmith told me that I should go with an electronic keypad vs. a mechanical tumbler. That way if I was on vacation I could change the combo before I left if someone had to get into the safe while I was gone, and I could change it back when I returned. To do that with a mechanical tumbler, I'd have to call in a locksmith.

A guy on another site that was in the safe business recommended staying with mechanical locks. He stated reliability is better with the good S&G's.

Interesting. I wonder if it's like the Ford/Chevy thing? A friend who uses his safe almost daily is going to have to have his mechanical lock replaced. It's getting worn enough that his combo is off by almost a full number for it to open.
I suppose it also might depend on the quality of the electric/mechanical combo, and how is a consumer to tell what is quality and what is crap?

Well I ended up getting a Kodiak gun safe from rural king. Got a great deal on it, 200$ off original price. These are made by rhino safes and are well made, this one with an hour fire rating. My question now is I have it in my garage which isn't heated. Ive heard mixed opinions from friends as to whether it would be OK to keep them out there. I have a stack on desicant inside, the kind you plug in to recharge. I thought it be good to keep it out there so I don't wake the wife up when I go hunting in the morning, but I don't want my guns damaged/ rusting. Opinions or ideas?

I have had one in the garage before and didn't have any issues. Just get a goldenrod dehumidifier for it and you should be good.

I've got a Browning and a Cannon brand safe, no complaints with either, both fire rated. My best advice would be to get one that is considerably bigger than what you think you need. Most of these safes will not hold as many long guns as they claim to, particularly when you have scopes on them.
Bolt it to the floor so in event of a break in they can't steal the whole safe.

ive been happy with my cannon w electronic key pad. Me or the wife are in it multiple times a day (keep meds in it too) I just replaced the battery in it about a week ago, first in two years. I like that i can access it quickly in the dark. try that with a tumbler
as stated above, get bigger than you think you need. they hold about half the guns they claim...and bolt it down good!

Just like when you build a new pole building or garage. Its never big enough. I have two safes a cannon and a liberty. The cannon with the keypad is much easier to access like trapperdave said. The liberty is kind of a pain in the ass to get into in a hurry. So thats where the safe queens are. LOL
