Do you have access to hunt a lot of properties? It would seem like you would meet a lot of land owners.

Used to work at idem doing stream water quality monitoring and biological assessments. I worked in the Environmental Science Field for several companies doing the same thing once in a while. In school we did stream water quality studies and biodiversity studies on the Wildcat Stream/river near West Lafayette, IN.
I've done water sampling on surface waters and on various wells in the coal fields in Southern, IN as well as on some wells in several local landfills.
But going out in the winter to collect water samples is not all fun and games. It's hard work hauling all the equipment around in the field. And trying to find the wells in a strange county in another state without GPS back in the old days was taxing at times.
Most of my time was spent in the office or the laboratory though. Sigh.

I do reclamation work for 3 Peabody Coal mines, and a Triad Coal mine in the southern to mid parts of the state trying to put back that what was taken. It's almost a loosing battle. Good. So many of the old mine lands down here are not repaired and left in spoil banks and deep ravines. Reclaiming the land back to it's original contours is a good thing and helps bring new jobs to the area.

Family used to farm, my sister and brother-in-law still do. We raised sheep the past two years but selling out now, but it was never a living, just a way to get meat on the table that wasn't processed in China. After we relocate will probably own Farm animals again. Best thing next to venison in the freezer.

Worked full time as an LEO in a rural Indiana county since the late 70's. Part time farmer of cash rented land until I sold out in 2003. Big farmers kept buying the land I had leased, and the local elevators were going away.

You could tell EXACTLY where they were mining in 1977*. The property was a new tree farm. 90% of the property had good growth of the trees, and 10% has essentially planes type grasses. *1977 was when new regulations were enacted that changed how topsoil was returned for reclamation purposes.

About the only wildlife in the reclaimed areas are mice, coyotes, and hawks. I think of the reclaims as barren areas. Eventually when they become reforested they may once again harbor some wildlife. Not trying to be contrary but I did that kind of work for several years.
