Sounds like that stand needed removed quite some time ago.
Prayers for all involved.

Safety harness would have done no good in this case.

Safety harness would have done no good in this case. Yep if anything he could have had a chance to jump away from the tree but he did even have that option. Sad deal !!

When I received a call on this it was stated that it was a tree stand accident and I presumed it was a typical fall but in lite of this article I agree it looks like a harness would not have helped. Terrible accident. Praying for the family.

lesson here is to put stands in trees that are very much alive and not subject to any dead or dying stuff. I always try to recommend poplar trees. But like Dave said, it could have been storm damage.

That area has been hammered by the emerald ash borer as well. Sad deal all around, one of the wife's favorite customers.
Prayers to the family and friends

Pretty sure this stand was pretty much holding up the tree, the tree had somewhat grown into the stand

We had a stand in the similar situation. We just left it and let nature takes its course. Just noticed if fell sometime last month maybe.

The guy that I bought this house from had a couple of 2x4's nailed between 3-4 Maple Trees that were about 8" dia. He had a wooden ladder to get up there. One day one rung broke and he took a tumble, screwing up his back. After I bought the place I just left it as it was, and put up a 2-man ladder stand next to it in a much larger tree. Earlier this year those trees and the remains of his stand all came crashing down in a windstorm.
I don't trust wooden ladders any more, either in the shop or in the woods.

Agreed, I will not have a wooden ladder.
