I know we have had plenty of arguments and discussions on good shots and wounded deer but thats what I'm going to ask about. Dad said "ask your buddies online" so I'm going to. He shot a big buck at 515. He jumped on the first shot straight in the air. Then walked regular. He shot again and thought he saw a flinch. Got down and found good blood for 100 yards and then started to Peter out. He left a lot of scuffed up leaves as he ran down hill and into a dry creek bed. We are getting good lights and Piper. She will help. Thanks for any advice.

Maybe hit him back on the first shot. I'd give him a little time. Dead now still dead in a couple hours

Circle? Deer do all kinds of unexpected things when they are shot..
If you don't know exactly where he hit the deer I'd wait as long as possible ..maybe even until morning ?
Piper is a dog or another person ?
Good luck and keep us informed ..

I'd definitely wait until morning. Gonna be cold enough that deer will be fine until then. Dead now equals dead later.

We went back tonight as neighboring property owner won't let us in until afternoon tomorrow when his nephew is done hunting. Found blood for a long time. Got to a creek bed and never found out where he went from there. He's off tomorrow. When I get off I'll be helping. Hopefully he's a dead deer. We found big puddles of blood. Bigg. Then it went to drops. With day, isn't I think we will have better luck.

He went and looked today. Had to be out by noon. Found no more blood but grid searched for three hours down every trail that looked like one he might take. Dad thinks he went by one of the neighbors trail cams. Hopefully he'll have pics of the hit. No deer yet.

If the deer jumped straight up off all four feet, dad has more than likley shot low and opened the sternum up, because its low down it bleeds hard for a time until it clots, it all depends what other damage has been done as to how far the animal will go or if indeed he will stop at all. It circling was because the deer knew something had happened just simply did not understand what had happened. I have had roe do the same with copper ammo this year, and i put another round into them. good luck in your trailing Billy
