My deer hunting seasons come and go with me averaging a buck every 3-4 years it seems. I let all the little ones walk by in hopes that they grow up so I can see their full potential. To me, I get a huge thrill "hunting" them with trail cameras, so sightings and opportunities to pull the trigger are moments I treasure! Tonight, after countless hours in the stand one big boy finally messed up and I was there to take advantage! I'd seen a group of 4 does feed across a winter wheat field and into a woodlot to my west, but unfortunately no bucks were following. The winds had almost made me give up, but I decided to stay put and hope they died down near sunset which they had. Things felt right, but no buck activity had been seen. It was about 530, you know that point where you start thinking that if it doesn't happen in the next 15 minutes you'll be making the long walk back to the truck...again...empty handed. Out of nowhere I heard a huge commotion in the woodlot that I'd seen the does enter earlier. I could tell a buck was chasing a doe, but was it a BIG buck? This buck started grunting and didn't stop for over a minute...and it was LOUD! I stood and got the .50 cal ready and just like that he popped out of the woods and into the field. I just glanced at his head enough to know he was a shooter and then I looked for his shoulder in the scope. The buck had spun around like he was about to run back into the woods so I didn't waste time and squeezed the trigger. He was 10-0 before he hit the ground. The Shockwave turned his lights out faster than any other round I've ever used. All that was left was the photo session and getting him into the truck for the ride home! I couldn't be more happy other than the fact that my son was working and not with me when I took the deer. He's hanging right now and my Thanksgiving will be spent butchering and caping him. I couldn't be more thankful for my biggest deer to date. He's got 13 points and bases I can't get my hands around. It's been a while since I've put one on the wall that was harvested by myself, so I'm anxious to start the taxidermy process on him.
