Met up with fellow member Chris (aka crisiscowboy) yesterday at one of my honey holes. Area always produces rabbits. After meeting him at a gas station and blindfolding him, driving back roads for nearly an hour we arrived at the spot. About the only good thing that happened was...well they didn't break any legs jumping from the tailgate.
We had six dogs down. Two of his and four of mine. I brought my old man, my bleeder, my black and tan that sounds like a coon dog and my meth addict pup. I think we walked all of ten steps before they jumped one. Obviously a doe. She didn't circle big circles. Where I was standing the dogs ran her right to me and she sat there. I tried getting Chris's attention but he couldn't hear me. She finally jumped again and the dogs continued to circle her. She kept running up the road so I told Chris to go stand over there, as soon as he did the rabbit crossed right where he was standing 2 seconds ago. They circled that one a good 5 or six times. Pulled them off that one and went looking for another. I think we walked another ten yards and they jumped another. This one obviously was a buck. He took them over 400 yards before circling. We stood on the road waiting to shoot it. With all the b.s.ing I think we missed the chance to shoot at it 5 times. I finally seen it coming down the edge and pointed it out to Chris. It popped out on the road and stopped. Chris took careful aim at the sitting rabbit if I recall mere feet from him and missed it. Luckily for him he did get it on the second shot. It was a huge buck, weighed at least 8 pounds, well before I picked all the shot out of it rear end.
Moved another ten yards down and they jumped another that didn't pan out, another ten yards and jumped another. Yes these were all separate bunnies. I stood in the thickets and let Chris stand on the nice open road. Another buck as they took this one about out of hearing before bringing it back. This one eventually tried to either commit suicide or wanting Chris to help as I believe he ended up running into Chris's lap. Having none of it as he is a heartless killer he shoots at it, I believe to ward off an eminent attack and then shoots again to nudge it over to me. As now the bunny is running mach three. There is a tree right in front of me so I proceede to shoot that to get it out of the way. The next shot I do believe I seen the rabbit roll. I spent the next 30 minutes looking for the rabbit with the dogs. Circled the area completely. There was no more running so I know he was laying there but alas never found it.
Left that area and the day just kept getting better. At one point they are running a rabbit in a thicket and my pup comes flying out screamimg. Every time I'd try to grab him he'd start howling and bawling. I finally grabbed ahold of him. I ripped his collar off. The only thing I could think was his collar was acting up and was shocking the living tar out of him. I had to sit and hold him for a good ten minutes to calm him down.
Walked a bit farther and, if you ask me, Chris's dogs jumped a "rabbit". They were just going in tiny circles in this Creek bottom yipping. Chris said its a mink. At this point I'm thinking he's half nuts seeings how in 40 years I've never seen one. Sure enough out pops a big buck mink. I'm thinking I'm shooting this thing. First thought pops into my head. In season? Second, man I don't have the cash to get one mounted. Mr mink went on his way.
Jumped another rabbit and this was obviously a big buck. Ran it across the road. We crossed as I never seen them cross back in that area. So anyway the rabbit crosses back. Now I seen this rabbit so I know that's what they are on. He proceeds to run the dogs well over 600 yards away. They lose it and dogs start wandering back. I had to get my old male and then couldn't find the pup because I had taken his collar off. I walking around screaming for him for a good 30 minutes. Finally found him back by the truck.
All in all it was a fun day. Lots of running. Dogs packed up real well. Out of two guys and six dogs the only one that wanted to keep hunting at the end of the day was my old dog. Of course once I got him home and into the warm kennel in the garage, I've had to poke him with a stick about once an hour to make sure he's still alive. All mine are on injury reserve. Pups ears are shredded, b&t pulled a muscle, tri is shredded from nose to tail, and the old man is just flat beat.
Good times and lookinh forward to doing it again. Just get the dogs mink broke Chris.
